Hello everybody, sorry if this has been talked about before but couldn't find it in search.
I have a 2011 Ram 3500 long bed DRW. I am shopping for a TC to replace my 5th Wheel Toy Hauler. (36 ft). I won't be racing motorcycles anymore due to an injury so I am going back to Jeeps.
I plan on towing a CJ on a 16 ft car hauler. (Big Tex). I know the combo will be heavy, TC, jeep and Trailer. I am worried about losing too much tounge weight capability with a hitch extension that is too long. So my question is how much camper is too much with my set up? I am not sure how much tounge weight the jeep and trailer will add. I was hoping to go without a hitch extension, but if I need one, what is the longest I can go before I go too much? How long of a TC would you go with for that set up? Should be I looking for a TC with only an 8 foot floor? Would I be okay with a 10ft floor camper? I would love to be shopping for somehing with a slide, but would that be too heavy with the trailer?

I bought a Reese Titan hitch and their 42" extension to pull my open trailer that I haul my ATV or Harley on. The 42" extension has a tongue weight limit of 450 pounds according to the label.
Why not flat tow the CJ? I flat tow my TJ and have no problems.
Thanks for the info on weights. Spanky I already own the trailer, I have the truck capable to pull it, plus if I break it on the trail I want to be able to get the CJ home. What I will do is measure the tongue weight with the CJ and see how long of a an extension I can use before needing the Truss system. Then get the camper to that length. Thanks everyone
I have done all the toys through the years including several years with my 76 CJ. Join a club and have a great time with your rig. Now for some advice, this rig sounds like it would be no problem to build, go to Tork Lift's web site and get the 20k super hitch and then decide what truss you will need. Coming from a big 5er I would suggest you go big on a TC, even the biggest TC's will feel small after having all that room so plan on being outside. Setting up your Dodge for the task will not be cheap since you will need everything, 5 grand installed will cover it. I think you understand off road jeeps and flat towing is out of the question. Unless you only plan on driving on fire roads be prepared to break parts, suffice to say a trailer is mandatory for any serious jeeper. Call David over at Galaxy truck campers in Ontario if you live in CA, he is the best and will do you right. John runs a shop in Corona and can handle your jeep if you can't. All 4-wheel drive I believe is the name. On the Edge is a great jeep club in San Diego if you live near, there are dozens of clubs to choose from. IMO a good club will make your jeep trips much more fun. Have fun!
