I have a thick rubber mat, even with that I have noticed the camper moving a little on a long trip(10,000 miles) between unloading. I have a 2X8 in the front of my truck bed and I suspect on my last loading I got too close and when I lowered the camper is sheared off on the 2X8. I am wondering if I actually need the bumpers. Would a carpeted 2x8 serve the same purpose of keeping the camper from bending the front wall of my truck bed?

Hi, I have....or had 2 rubber bumpers on the front of my Northstar Adventurer, last week when I unloaded the camper one of the rubber bumpers were broken off. I am thinking of removing them and putting a carpeted 2X8 in the front. What do most campers have?

Thanks

Hi all, I have a 1 year old set of HappiJac swing mounts for sale. Like new, also have a set of Northstar extensions. Anybody interested? Very reasonably priced. Please PM me on the forum. I went to a self built slide system.

Also have a Leer fiberglass cab high camper shell for a short box Chevrolet, white in color. It is in perfect condition, $250. I am in south Mississippi, so shipping isn’t a reasonable option.

Just trying to clean up my shop a bit!

Thanks
Jay

Wow, that is a screened room, is there a “apron” under the truck, our mosquitos are incredibly sneaky and can find the smallest opening.

We are currently traveling in BC with our Northstar Adventurer 8.5 on our 3500 dually 3500. I recently had a roadside inspection (very polite and cordial officer, some US Customs guys could take a few lessons!) anyway, when I produced a CAT scale weight certificate, the inspection was basically over with a cheery “Enjoy Canada and have a great trip”

My point is.... gross weight does matter before the accident!

Sidecar, I absolutely agree, usually , easy on, early off! So far at the 3 month mark it still sheds bugs (got a plenty of those in South Mississippi). We were at the Northstar factory lback in the winter and NorthstarRex told me about this stuff. Also made in Mississippi!

As a follow up, I bought/received the Brand motion camera, totally unacceptable! From the license plate to the factory plug it is approximately 14-18 inches. The Brandmotion camera system had 20 feet of wire with several totally amateurish splices . I called their tech support number and was told to simply tie wrap the additional wire under the truck. Unacceptable, when you invest in a $70,000 truck and expect many years of service, a jury rig like this, not on my truck! Very disappointed, sent their camera system back to them.

I coated my filon Northstar with a product called Topcoat. Got it from Amazon, there seem to be a lot of similar coatings. It brightened the surface substantially and seems to make the bugs easier to remove. Also helps the window seals stay supple. I didn’t want a abrasive product because I thought it may break the surface coating of the filon.

Thanks! I just ordered mine from Bramdmotion. It will mount on the 2 license plate screws. Such a PIA to remove the tailgate when you have to root around under the truck to disconnect the camera. My original goal was to have my camper where we can (and do) load and go in 10 minutes.

Hi all, I traded my 09 2500 for a 18 3500 that has a backup camera in the tailgate. Unfortunately the tailgate won’t be going on any of our truck camper adventures. Has anyone heard of a camera relocation kit? There is a spiffy plug and built in blank off for the plug when you remove the tailgate but I “think” I would like the camera when the camper is on the truck. Seems like a good way to watch the boat and such. Any ideas?

Thanks
Jay

Absolutely agree, I have brought my concerns here several times. But if ya don’t weigh it, it don’t count! When I did the math, I should have been under gross weight. Cat scale said I was overgross. The truck drove fine, etc. I decided to upgrade to a drw 3500, made a world of difference in how it drives. There was a discussion about being ticketed from being over weight. I have no concerns about that, most DOT employees could care less about a pickup truck. They are looking at the big guys (and should) My concern is an accident. If you are involved in a major accident with injuries the legal experts can easily prove you disregarded the manufacturer’s gross weight you will have problems. We all have worked hard to get to a position we can enjoy our lifestyle to loose out because of something so easily (yet expensive) remedy.

Completely agree! We started with a Chevolet 2500 Crew Duramax SWB and our Northstar Adventurer. I had serious concerns about liability in case of a accident, (slightly overgross) so I upgraded the truck to a 3500 Crew Duramax LWB dually. As a career pilot there is no such thing as slightly overgross, you are or you aren’t. No in between. Can’t imagine a more different driving experience! Can’t have too much truck, darn sure can have too much camper for the truck!

Sidecar, I absolutely wholeheartedly agree! My Northstar has a “out the door, as equipped weight” on the manufacturer’s data plate. My helium got away..... when the TV lawyers find a target as easy as this is to harvest....... one call, that’s all!

I absolutely agree that a properly equipped truck is not a hazard if slightly overgross weight. The truck is certified by the manufacturer as a certain gross weight, maybe braking performance, some sort of evasive handling test, or maybe a known (by the manufacturer) structural issue. I have been a professional pilot for my entire working career, the term “overgross “ places the pilot at fault for most any enforcement action. The RV industry doesn’t seem to have concerns about gross weight, so maybe my concerns are unfounded.
Thanks for all the well considered responses!

I just ordered my second set of Torklift tiedowns, based upon the experience of the first set I bought the steel. I may spray tool coat on the rear set where the hind tires throw up rocks and sand. The first set of steel tie downs looked good after 40,000 miles, or at least nothing than 5 bucks of Rustolum wouldn’t fix!

Tale of the scale, it continued to bother me, so I weighed my rig on a CAT scale just as we started on a trip, about 1/2 tank of water and full of diesel, normal groceries, clothes and “stuff”.

Front axle 4150. Under by 350
Rear axle. 6620. Over by 536
Trailer 2500. Under (empty enclosed tandem trailer)

Grand total of 10,760 on the truck My truck manufacturers gross is 9200, 1560 lbs over gross on the truck with tongue weight of empty trailer. Adds up really quickly!

Soooo

I bit the big bullet and traded my 2009 2500 for a new 3500,

Gross weight 13,025
Front axle is 5600 gw
Rear axle is 9375 gw

Waiting on Torklift tiedowns to be delivered so don’t know the loaded weight but bet I am under gross now!

Thanks guys, as I mentioned, my truck doesn’t seem to be any worse for the overgross weight, my primary concern is a huge lawsuit because of a accident and in the discovery phase of the investigation being found to be overweight.
Maybe I am pandering for a new 1 ton too......

My truck is painfully close or over the truck’s gross weight limit. It handles fine and in 30,000 miles hasn’t shown any ill effects from overloading. BUT, in the event of a traffic accident am I opening myself up to a liability nightmare? I couldn’t imagine in litigation being overweight would play out very well!
Anybody have any experience with this issue? I am torn about replacing my current truck with a 1 ton.

Hi, I have a Chevolet 2500 HD, if you know the specific truck you are interested in, look in the glove compartment and find the yellow sticker that will tell you the max recommended weight for that truck.
Secondly, look in the drivers door frame and find the max axle weights and gross vehicle weight then just do the math to figure it out.

I am currently waiting till the 18 year models come out and may spec out a short bed single rear 3500 Duramax. My Northstar Adventurer has done fine in my 2500
Duramax but allup with a small trailer the truck is about 500 lbs overgross. I have liability concerns should the worst happen!

We pull a 7x12 tandem axle enclosed trailer, it has become the MOST convenient “accessory” for us. We have 2 inflatable kayaks, usually have a motorcycle, our Honda 2000 generator, grill..... you get the idea! I actually built cabinets and a closet to carry motorcycle clothes and cold weather clothes. No way we could carry all of those toys and camp without our in our Northstar. It really adds to the experience, we use the motorcycle to explore, really open up the area. I chose a 2 axle trailer with brakes on both axles. I thought it would be more stable under tow. The disadvantage, It is practically impossible to move it around the yard without using a vehicle, just too stable! For us, this is the perfect setup and after 2 years we would do it all again!

QUOTE(cjweener1 @ Mar 27 2017, 09:13 AM)
Thanks everyone!  Your comments have been really helpful to us!  We are interested in boondocking and getting away from the masses when possible so have decided upon the Dometic 6.6 c.f. 2 way that is standard on the Northstar.  We have a dual alternator Cummins and will try to configure that so we can more quickly recharge our batteries when driving (larger gauge wire, continuous duty solenoid, fuses to protect everything, etc.)
Nobody....I wish I had your knowledge with 50 years of camping experience...pretty amazing!

Sidecarflip...how do you recommend doing forced air cooling of the evaporator coil?  I've read a where folks will add small fans but not sure how to go about doing this.

Thank you all!!!
*

Our Northstar came with a little fan on the evaporator coil from the factory. Ours is the Dometic 3 way and other than a door switch problem it works well.

We have the King Jack antenna installed by Northstar and it is amazing! We routinely get 8-10 stations that are actually good. Very little drift in and out. Quite happy with it.
