Truck Camper Forum _ General Discussion _ Looking for exterior Reno advice

Posted by: Braggart Mar 26 2024, 03:10 PM

Hi everyone. This is officially my first post!

I have recently purchased a 2010 GMC Sierra Durmax with a 6.6ft box from a family member. My intention is to start looking for a truck camper going into summer. I currently own a bumper pull 23ft hardwall, but being a fisherman, I would love to be able to pull a boat AND have a camper instead of "one or the other".

My issue however is that the GMC currently has a beautiful custom made aluminum slip tank in the box that obviously causes issue with my plans.

Some history...the truck is mint, and decked out. My wife's cousin went to no expense to outfit it for towing his fifth wheel. The slip tank was to compensate for the less than stellar diesel capacity for this particular model. As a result, he had a special slip tank fabricated and plumbed into the front end of the box. It would be an awful shame to have it removed, not to mention the cost of doing so.

My question, as I start the process of going down the truck camper rabbit hole:

Would it be possible to purchase a used TC and have someone (professional) cut out the bottom 2-3 feet of box/floor to accommodate the slip tank? Or would this be a BAD idea?

Just looking for some feedback from others that have done work on their TCs.

Appreciate your comments.
