I seen a thread here where someone was looking for an extension hitch over 18''.... I make my own, and can make different sizes.

They're very simple to make, and very strong!..... When I haul my camper, I couldn't pull my boat without one.

If anyone would like to see a picture how I make them, and the metal that it takes to make one, then just let me know.... I don't care to share this!!!

I plan on building my own setup, I would be interested in seeing what you did.

Hey Rick,

I've tried to post pictures, and can't figure out how to do it.... I even ask how in a thread but haven't had any help...(yet)

This is what I use to make mine:

1) A piece of angle iron 3-1/2'' wide, 1/4'' thick....(Cut to the length you want)

2) A piece of tubing to fit in your 2'' receiver....I cut mine long enough to go back as far as it can in my receiver, then mark & drill my hole.

I let the tubing go the length of the ''angle iron'' (underneath)

3) I buy a ''bumper hitch'' and cut the ''hitch box'' off, and weld it on the end of the angle iron....(You can buy the bumper hitches for under $30, but sometimes I can find used ones)

Then I weld everything up..... When I weld the tubing to the angle iron, I run a bead the full length of the tubing...(One on each side)

I put the ''hitch box'' under the angle iron, and weld it up good..... I let the tubing go almost to the hitch box, and that lets your receiver go back in the ''hitch box'' and have good support.

I also add a piece of ''flat bar'' under the ''hitch box'' for safety chains on my boat.... (just drill a hole on each side)

The extension hitches I make are very strong, and look great..... I get most of my metal to make mine at ''rebuild shops'' for coalmines.... They have all kinds of scrap metal laying around...( But you might find what you need at a ''welding shop'')

When I'm ready to paint mine black, I have a little sand to put on top of the angle iron so it won't be slick when you step on it.

*I hope you understand how I make mine, and I wish I knew how to post a picture on here.... I didn't think it would be that hard, and I tried to use the ''Browse button'', but nothing loads.

If you have anymore questions let me know!

Rick,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you...(been busy)

I'll take some pictures today, and put them in Picasa so other members can look at it if they want..... I still don't know how to go through this site to add pictures, but the Picasa will work.

Bill

Rick,

Here's one that I made.... It's 2ft. long, and when the receiver is in, It's 33 inches long..... On this one you can see where I added the sand so it won't be slick, and it helps a lot.

The way I did it is.... I sprayed painted it and added the sand... Then painted over the sand.... I did that 3 times, and it turns out great.

When I took the picture of this one today, The paint wasn't dry yet. biggrin.gif

I went through a different place to post pictures.

As long as you don't click the "Fast Reply" button more options will be presented and if you look under the "Post Icons" you will see a "File Attachments" section. Here you can browse your local computer for pictures you would like to upload. When the desired file is selected click "Add This Attachment" and wait while the picture is being uploaded to the forum's servers. Once the page is finished loading there will be a message under the "File Attachments" section with an option to add another file and an option to remove the attached file in case you have made a mistake otherwise you can submit the form and the image will be attached with the post.

Sorry for the newbie question, but what kind of weight to you think these are capable of holding. I tow about a 6000lb. trailer/Jeep combo, with about 300-400lb tongue weight. I'm purchasing a 8' camper to put on my 6.5' bed, 2001 2500 Ram with factory class5 hitch. Thanks for any input.

I am in the process of building one similar to that but doubled up on the drawbar. Be careful with a 8 footer on a six because the center of gravity of the camper may now be behind the rear axle. #300 - 400 lbs. should not be a problem on the hitch extension but watch that rear weight.

The ones I make (like the one I posted) can hold a lot weight!

I have a John Deere tractor that weighs 6,100lbs. and the trailer I haul the tractor on weighs 1,500lbs...... I've used the ''hitch extension'' to tow my tractor, and it held up great!

The hitch extensions are very easy to make if you can weld!

Hope that helps!, and good-luck!

just be weary of using only one receiver hitch. depending on the length of your extension you could also rip your receiver off of your frame. if you have a class v yours should be okay. some of these guys use an 18 incher on "factory class IV" hitches. Ive seen this set up goin down the road pulling small atv trailers and flexing the receiver like a butter knife. I personally use a curt class v hitch that mounts underneath my oem hitch on my dodge and built a 4 foot extension using 3/8 inch thick tubing coming out of both receivers mimicking superhitchs setup but i did mine for $300 including hitch and all the parts. I realize im a little late on this post but i hope it was helpful

I replaced the tongue on my trailer that I haul my ATVs with one that's 3 feet longer than the original. This seemed like a simpler solution to me. As long as it clears the camper, what problems could I have with it?

There are a couple of things you will have to watch for. First is that the trailer will be pivoting at the rear of the truck and not at the rear of the camper so the arc of the trailer will probably cause it to be very close to the camper on turns if not hitting it. The second thing to watch is trailer fishtailing.
