I'll sell my F-250 soon and have pretty much decided on a Host Mammoth. I'm trying to decide between an F-350 or F-450. Both will be 4x4, DRW, long bed. Ford's specs say that the 350 actually carries a payload ~200# greater than the 450. Not sure if this is after the optional GVWR pack is purchased or not.

Why would I need an F-450 and get ~2mpg less? I guess the longer front axle makes for a tighter turning radius but that alone doesn't sell me. Thoughts?

Tks,

Bob

Buying a truck this year and, since I get a choice, I thought I'd ask which bed liner works best for a truck camper I will buy later.

We have a 2005 Lance Camper 835 Lite  It has Atwood electric jacks with remote.  We think we need to replace the remote activation switch, but don't know where to buy one for this camper.  Any suggestions.

Enormous problem for those of us with pre 2010 Atwood electric jacks as they have stopped making the part # 85440 "wireless remote activation switch". This is the little lighted and timed toggle switch that you must hit before you can start using your remote to start lifting/lowering your jacks. As yet I have not become aware of a work-around though I hope to hear something soon. Alternatives for now include jacking manually or part replacement but I'm not even sure which parts to replace.

Appreciate the reply Dennis, we have purchased our new camper and decided to go with the Lance 815. I couldn't get past the weight issue and didn't want to severly overload my truck. As it is without loading personal gear she weighed 2500 lbs, started as 1865 lbs on the brochure so the few options added up pretty quickly. I took the whole rig to work and all together weighed 10,000 lbs on the nose, I figure ready for camping it will come in maybe 10,750 to 11,000 with full fuel and water and passengers and all the junk my better half can cram into it.
When we unloaded our fifth wheel for trade in we couldn't believe how much stuff we had crammed in there, and how much stuff we had probably never used just cause I like to be prepared. Can't do that anymore now, there just isn't the room.
Hope to see ya all camping, camping weather is here now in Florida.

My 06 handles my 820 just fine and I'd have no problem picking up an 830 if I could afford one. No additions except for a big rear sway bar and air bags. I use BFG Radial T/As that are only D rated and have had no problems hauling the camper and a utility trailer with bikes/junk. The Rickmans are sweet but I need the traction for off road.

I curently own a 2006 30' TT and am wanting to dowwnsize for the convience of a truck camper, but all the reading ive done on this site has led me to be afraid.  I am in the military stationed in the far NW corner of WA and am unable to find a scale to get an accurat payload cap. for my truck.  if anyone has the same truck, id like to know what you can carry.  I have  a 1999 f250 superduty ext cab long bed 4x4 auto trans with the 7.3.  i have my eye on a 2006 eagle cap 1050 but after today, think its too much.  id hate to think that all i can haul with a superduty ford is a pop-up camper.  and last, dose anyone know if its possable to find a camper for this truck that is good quality with a slid and a bathroom + a/c under $23K?

My 06 with the 6.0 handles my Lance 820 just fine power wise. I added a beefy sway bar to the rear and some bags over the rear axle that I have to inflate to ~75psi to level things out.

QUOTE(KenC @ Jan 26 2009, 11:21 AM)
Just bought my first truck camper and need some advice. I put a deposit on a used 2004 Sun Valley (Sun Lite) Eagle WT. Will be picking it up later this week. The current owner has a wiring harness that runs from the camper (appears to be a 6 way) to his pig tail (4 way). He was not sure whether it charged the battery in the camper. My preference would be to use the factory trailer 7 way on my Ford F250 and run a long connection to the 6 way on the camper and hopefully charge the battery in the camper. The camper's connector is at the very front of the camper, a wiring distance of more than 7 feet since that is the length of the bed.  Am I thinking right about what I need?

Also, understand Sun Valley has gone belly up. I've called and emailed them and got no response?  I need a owner's manual.  Does anyone know where I could get one for a this used unit?

Yeah, that's the way I did mine. Some outfit, whose name escapes me right now, makes a pigtail that goes out fm my 7pin Ford alongside my Lance to where it plugs into the camper. It also has spliced in a shorter length to accomodate an add'l trailer you might be towing. I changed the Lance plug to 7 pin and use the center, thick wire for charging.

You can get the prints faxed from Lance.

That certainly wasn't my experience. I've had occasion to go to the factory twice, once fairly recently (they're closer than my closest Lance dealer). Mike, the service manager, advised me that all he could offer would be a general wiring diagram showing the different appliances and how they are wired. Nothing about where the wiring runs, where the plumbing runs, or anything about the structure.

Don't even bother to ask how it happened...

The front two electric jacks on my 2004 Lance 820 were recently snapped off along with chunks of wood/glass they were attached to.

Anyone know of a place in Vegas that can fix this type of accident? The factory in Lancaster is an alternative.

Anyone care to share an estimate for what the repair will cost? No other systems involved except for the structural stuff that the jacks mount on.

Tks,

Bob

I'm considering welding casters to the jacks.

Look at six pack campers if you're really needing a boondocker. I look for gold in NV and my 820 gives me plenty of comfort (read a/c) and still will get me anywhere I want to go.

Hmm. Welding caster wheels onto the jacks would be an interesting solution...

I have a 2006 Ford F-250, diesel, crewcab, shortbed

I'm looking at a 2004 (made in 2003) Lance 820. The seller only wants $6500 for the camper, NADA says he should get around 12,500. I'll be inspecting the interior and the appliances but today I walked around the outside and looked at the roof. Unlike the Lance's I see online today, this one had fiberglass sides versus corregated aluminum. There's a lot of fiberglass dust in the furnace space. I know he said something about doing some repairs but is it possible that both sides were changed completely? What else should I look for and what is needed to secure this to my pickup?

Tks,

Bob
