I am pretty new at this, but have done a fair bit of research. I had my heart set on a Dodge 3500 dually diesel crew cab long box for an Arctic Fox 992, but it seems like I can't do it. The weight on the truck would be; 4956 lbs wet weight camper (gear included), 7675 lbs curb weight for the truck, and I would like 800 lbs of tongue weight for a future boat purchase (Is this too much?). Total here would be 13433 lbs total payload. The Dodge website lists the vehicle described above at 12200 lbs GVWR. Do these numbers seem correct to you and am I looking at this the right way; that I can't do it? Why does it seem like so many others are doing similar truck/camper matches?

See: http://www.truckcampermagazine.com/hitek-h...s-go-full-time/

"TCM: Tell us about your truck and camper. Year, make, model, and any modifications for both.

Johnny: The truck is a 2001 Ford F-350 dually. We've upgraded the brakes a bit and added Timbrens. We've also added both front and rear cargo carriers to haul a moped and bicycle along with a few odds and ends. The camper is a 2008 Arctic Fox 1140 wet bath."

It looks like these folks are cutting it pretty close with the Arctic Fox 1140.

Any recommendations on a truck. I kind of already know the f-series 450 would be recommended, anything else though.

Thanks, any input is appreciated.

you're right, the numbers are up there.

I have a Dodge 3500 dually diesel with a GVWR of 12200. With the family in the truck (dog included) plus the truck full of fuel, it weighs in at 8200lbs. I went with a much lighter camper (Adventurer 90FWS) and when its loaded with water food and cargo the entire rig weighs in at just under 12000 lbs. That left me just enough to haul my ATV trailer behind so I just squeak under my 12200lb GVWR limit with everything included. I do use a weight distribution hitch on the trailer to distribute the tongue weight amongst the truck and trailer axles which helps a bit.

Others are doing it.............and most TC owners out there with the heavier TC's are overweight. But they are still using them and having fun doing it. I'm not condoning being overweight, but its a fact. With the proper added suspension upgrades, most dually trucks can be made to comfortably handle the heavier TC's. I have a 2009 Chevy 3500 dually carrying an AF 1140 (there heaviest TC). I use Supersprings, Stable Loads, Helwig sway bar, and upgraded bilstein shocks. When I have my AF1140 loaded, I am still overweight, but the trucks handles it like a dream. Sometimes I forget its even back there.
Alot of AF990/992 owners have them on single rear wheels. I would not be afraid to carry either one of those an any of the dually trucks. If it doesnt feel right, do some suspension mods and have some fun.
