Hi group,

We have taken the Lance off of the truck and dropped it down to it's lowest position on the stabilizer jacks. We were wondering is this is "safe" to do and use to camp in it while off of the truck. Are there any special concerns we should have? Can the four jacks adequately handle the weight of the Lance and 3 occupants?

Yes, It's safe to camp in while it's off your truck..... You have 4 jacks and they will support it just fine!

I have a Sun Lite camper, and I always unload my camper at the campground.

i would be careful with 3 people moving around in a truck camper supported only by the legs. when i unload our camper i have a pr of jackstands and a 4x4 across the front under the floor for additional support. it would be real ugly if that thing tipped with you in it. to say nothing about getting it raised back up and into your truck again. the front legs are the longest and least supported, a little safety would be prudent.

I recently started using a 2 x 4 & 2 jack stands as diesel rat does. I am not so concerned about tipping but it does take a lot of the sway out when moving around the camper. It keeps my jack mounts from loosening up as well.

When you unload a TC and let the jacks all the way down as far as they will go, Then there is ''no way'' a TC can ''tip over''.... if that's what some are talking about. ..... That's why they have 4 jacks.

I used to have a TC that only had 3 jacks, and I always unloaded it at campgrounds also, and had 4 people in the camper..... Me, wife & 2 teenage kids.

I've never seen a TC that would ''tip'' when it's lowered all the way down!.... (I must be missing something here.)...Sorry!

But, If it would make you feel better.... You could buy some ''scissor jacks'' and put one on each side under the bottom boards that sit in the bed of your truck..... Then you would have 6 jacks.

Depending on the manufacturer, you may need to support the "basement" where the water tanks are when its off the truck. Not all campers' basement floors are designed to carry the weight of full water tanks when they're off the truck. Your users manual should tell you if its ok or not.

I have an Adventurer 90FWS and its states in the manual not to load or unload the camper with the water tanks filled. I contacted the factory and was told off the record that that statement was a C.Y.A. statement on thier part and that I should probably be ok.....

.... So! I reinforced my basement floor with thicker plywood and additional aluminum supports around all sides. With the modifications, I get 3/32" of deflection in the basement floor when the water tank is filled up. This should be ok but I will still support the floor with additional jacks and 4x4s when its off the truck... just in case. At least I know that I can remove it from the truck with full tanks without the floor dropping out. Once the supports are in place, I'll have that extra "peace of mind".
