Hi Rodg here, any truck campers out there that can give me some advice on what ply tire i should use on my Dodge 3/4 ton diesel truck. I am building my own camper, Glen-L design, Alcapulco model, i think it will weigh in around 2,500 lbs, loaded 3,000. i went to a tire store and he told me 10ply would work fine. i would like any reply good or bad that any camper owner out there might have. should i go with a 10 ply or 12 ply.

QUOTE(Rodg @ Mar 29 2007, 07:01 PM) Hi Rodg here, any truck campers out there that can give me some advice on what ply tire i should use on my Dodge 3/4 ton diesel truck. I just set up my 2004 Ram 2500 quadcab 4wd longbed for a camper. I added the Firestone airbags. First trip was about 800 miles for 4 days over Thanksgiving. I am adding Rancho 9000xl rear shocks as soon as they are delivered. My camper weighs in at just under 2000lbs, and carried well except if I hit a bump, or entered a corner too fast on the mountain switchbacks. The shocks should help with that. Stock tires on hte dodge are rated at 3400lbs each. Axle rating is 6000lbs. Truck weighs in at just over 7000lbs empty. My camper puts me just over my max weight rating without passengers. With the camper, you are going to be at least 1000lbs over the weight of my camper. That will put you somewhere between 1000 and 2000lbs over your gross vehicle weight rating. You might want to look at finding a dually rear axle and bed for the weight. You can also go with 19.5 rims that will mount commercial truck tires http://www.ricksontruck.com/. They are expensive, but cool. Hellwig makes a rear swaybar for our truck as well that will suck up some of the sway. good Luck, Dave |
