Looking for a truck camper that will work with a 2011 F250 Super Duty 4x4 Crew cab. Any suggestions???

What type of camping do you like...offroad or developed campgrounds? How many campers will be living in it? I prefer slide-in popup myself. Lower center of gravity is good for off-road travel. I've owned 4 popups, never had a hardside camper.

We usually zoom through Arizona on our way to and from Mexico but this year we will be spending 4 to 6 weeks in the deserts of southern Arizona spending more time in some of our favorite spots and exploring some new ones.  We really like the desert around Organ Pipe Cactus NM and Tucson.  We will come down in mid January.

We have a large truck & camper.

What are some of your favorite spots in southern Arizona?

Thanks ........  Dave

Dave,

One of the most beautiful areas in my opinion is the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge south of Quartzite. You can camp in some very remote areas (Free!). I used to set up a photo blind at Little White Tank in the Southern portion during the summer in the mid/late '90's (talk about hot!) and never saw a soul. Of course no one except me was dumb enough to go out there in the summer. I was able to photograph many bighorn sheep, foxes, deer, bobcat, etc. This time of year it will probably be more visited but I'm sure it would be worth it to you to take a look. Lots of photo ops and good desert views.

Hey Cliff:
Good idea. I'll give it a try. Did the Yakama rack mount to the top or the side of the roof? Thanks.

Mine attaches to the top. I drilled holes thru the roof (scary I know but so far no leaks in 5 years).

I have an Apache pop-up camper. Does anyone know how much weight I can put on the roof and still be able to raise the roof without unloading it. I want to put two kayaks on the roof which will probably weigh about 150 lbs including the weight of the rack.

Newenglander,

I have a 1999 Apache popup slide-in that I bought in 2005. I removed the roof air (didn't want or need it) and instead carry a Pelican canoe on a Yakama rack on top. Weight is probably around 100 lbs total. It cranks up ok; need to use a bit of muscle, but not overly tough (my wife can raise it ok). I've driven it on lots of rough desert roads/trails and it does just fine.
I suggest putting a tarp over the top to protect it, set the kayaks up there and see if it works okay before installing the rack. Hope that helps.
