I'm having trouble finding an insurance company for my truck camper. I'm a field biologist and I am using my rig (2000 Ford F250 diesel/1995 Jayco popup camper) as my field vehicle.. and my full time home. (My 'real' house on property is rented out.)
USAA said they could not insure the camper, because it is my full-time home, not just a recreational camper, and therefore it's not covered as part of the auto insurance. They referred me to Progressive, which wouldn't insure the camper, because it was used partially for business use (i.e. not recreational). I called USAA back, and they then referred me to Foremost, which also declined coverage for the same reason as USAA...full-timer. Foremost insures full-timers with trailers and motor-homes, but not truck campers (...really?...tell me what's the *^%$# difference?!) Sure, I'd like to have some kind of comprehensive insurance for the camper in case of damage, but I could do without, given it's so old (however, I've sunk a lot of repair costs into it over time). My main concern is liability for the host of things that could happen causing injury to someone else. Help anyone! Biologist in insurance limbo-land |

I am a fulltimer in my fifth wheel, I also have a truck camper and all my vehicles are insured with Nationwide. Not sure how they would look at your arrangment but you could call. I personally would not tell them about the full timer thing but thats just me.

QUOTE(wildland-bio @ Aug 6 2016, 02:29 PM) Thanks so much, Spanky. I did call Nationwide and they do insure truck camper full-timers!...and no problem with my using it to travel/camp for work purposes. I first called USAA back to verify that the camper is covered for liability when attached to the truck. Nationwide covers liability if the camper is parked (for example if someone is injured getting in or out of the camper, etc.) So, I now have a policy that covers the above liability, the camper, personal effects, etc. Yay! Thanks again Spanky and Truck Camper Forum! |
