Well sometimes life throws you curve balls and one has just gotten thrown at the wife and me. Because of an unexpected and unanticipated family crisis we must sell our unused 2016 Arctic Fox 1140 truck camper. We cannot in good conscience take off for weeks or months at a time with the family situation as it stands now. Our plans of crisscrossing the Canadian provinces, hitting the Alcan Highway to Alaska and exploring Alaska, then coming back and going in search of America have now been put on hold for the foreseeable future.

We bought this camper on June 24th 2016 from Truck Camper Warehouse in West Chesterfield, NH. We stayed in it one night at the warehouse, on one of their campsites, as they like you to do to familiarize yourself with the camper and how everything works. Next day we drove it home to West Springfield, a 60 mile trip, and dropped it on the cement slab we had put in this spring so we would have a dedicated place to put the camper. We spent the next week or so shopping to get all the accouterments to outfit the camper for short and long hauls. I am talking everything like toasters, coffeepots, camp chairs, silverware, plates, sheets, pillows and on and on. This baby was loaded and ready to go.

The day before we were supposed to take it on its first break-in/learn trip up to Lake Ontario, the turd hit the turbines, (as we say in the Air Force) with the family situation. There is a sizable sum of money tied up in the camper and the 2016 Chevy Silverado Duramax Crew Cab dually diesel with 8’ bed. Because there is no change anticipated with the family situation for at least the next few years we feel it best that we try and sell it rather than have it just sitting on the cement slab for a few years therefore we are trying to sell the camper, at a little loss.

It is a beautiful camper with the slide out for the dinette and cooking area. Plenty roomy and well-built with dark cherry cabinets and an aluminum framed super structure to prevent rot.

It has all the standard feature as shown in the link to the web site and on the attached picture. It has the FOX VALUE PACKAGE shown in the same. For additional options it has:

EZ open handle
AM/FM/CD/DVDPLAYER
22” 110/12V LED TV
Thermal pane windows
Fox Landing (these are the nice step that fold out at an angle so you are not stepping on your trailer hitch when exiting the camper.
It has a wet bath
11K BTU Air Conditioner
3 burner cook top
Microwave oven
Slide-out topper
Rear motorized awning

We also equipped it with dealer installed:

2 Trojan AGM G27 batteries
Back up camera.
Additional aluminum step
Honda 2000i generator
Aluminum Torque Lift Tiedowns with Fast Gun restraints.
Hitch extension with wiring so we could also pull our boat.

This is about as well equipped truck camper as you will find. You will need to do nothing but change out the tie-downs for your truck, load her up and drive her away. Existing tie downs are for a 2016 Chevy 3500 dually. This camper fully loaded will require a truck with an 8’ bed GVW of around 13,000-14,000 pounds. I was told you can get away with a single rear wheel vehicle with the addition of Stabil loads and suspension air bags but I would not suggest it. It’s in better shape now than when we bought with the wax job that took three days to finish.

Total we paid for this camper which has only seen a 60 mile ride home was $40,000. We have probably added $500 dollars’ worth of stuff equipping it. I am asking $38,000.
I can only find the NADA value for a 2015 1140 Arctic Fox equipped similar to ours (ours has a few more options). Link below.

I might consider selling the tuck and camper as a whole package. I don’t need this big a truck as I will not have the camper. I am having a little trouble getting a used truck value on it because it is a 2016 but if someone is interested we can talk.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab, 8’bed, Duramax Diesel, dual rear wheels, 14000lb GVW, 4,700lb payload package. It has just about every option available except the rear seat DVD player. It has less than 7,000 miles on it. On the recent trip to Florida it got 22MPG highway unloaded. Average mileage overall all is 16 MPG. That isn’t bad for a big truck like this. Again I am just considering selling the truck because I like it so darn much.

Well Sue and I picked up our 2016 Arctic Fox 1140 truck camper last month. Dropped it on the cement slab we had put in next to the garage. Spent the first week waxing it and buying all the accouterments we would need for camping. Chairs, grill, dishes silverware, coffer pot toaster, silverware etc.

Then the schitt hit the fan with Mom. Family crisis in Florida necessitated us moving her from Florida up here to Massachusetts. She is in a beautiful place, is safe and well cared for but I cannot in good conscience consider taking off for weeks or even months at a time as we had planned.

We were going to criss-cross all the Canadian provinces, hit the ALCAN and go spend a month or so in Alaska. Then return home and take a lot of long trips in search of America.

Will be selling it outright or maybe bringing it back to the place we bought it from to be sold on consignment. We never used anything. Sucks but %$#&* happens.

Dang thing has only had a 60 mile ride home. sad.gif

I would not use the melamine in the micro-wave oven. A quick google search will provide you with information on why not.

We looked at the melamine but finally decided on 4 place Correll set because of the instability of the melamine in a microwave. Weight difference was negligible.

Yes I am reading this. However I still think that the tie-downs should supply restraint for both forward and reverse motion. Just my take and what I was told by the folks where I bought my camper. smile.gif

Aren't the tie downs supposed to lend restraint both for forward and reverse motion or impact? It appears yours are only sufficient to prevent rearward movement of your camper but provide nothing to prevent forward movement in the event of an accident or severely short stop.

Only outside pullout drawer we have is right under the door and blocked by the top step. In order to access it you have to remove the top step. It is long and narrow. Mightbe a place for my fish poles and some minor tackle. All our hoses and electrical cords are stored on the port side in the storage compartment there. Everything fits fine. The generator and a 1 gallon gas can fit just fine in the generator compartment behind the ladder.

The only other thing that pulls out is the tray upon which the two deep cycle batteries rest.

Why would you carry diesel oil? I was first concerned about the capacity of the fuel tank being 36 gallons. But after having done some research and having AAA membership and ONSTAR I am not concerned about running out of fuel or DEF. Plenty of range and when the diesel exhaust fluid starts running low you still have 800-1000 miles before it starts impeding the power of the engine.

Drawer in rear slideout is....18.25 wide x 18.50 deep x 7.375 high.

Drawer by the sink is 10.75 wide x 15.00 deep x 3.75 high. I think that is the one you are thing of for you silverware. We use that for dish towels and the like.

We opted for the silverwar drawer/cooking utensil/knife drawer to be the top drawer by the stove. it is 14.25 wide x 14.50 deep x 3.75 high.

We have the camper totally equipped at this point in time. There is so much storage in that 1140 there is no way that we would ever fill up all the compartments.

One thing I added was a bar to hang clothes in the large closet to the left of the sink area.

Tested it out last week. Ran the AC, and lights no problem at all. Even ran the water pump with the AC and lights and everything worked just fine.

That is the generator that I have. Can be run in parallel with another generator. I don't see any need to that while camping and would not want the additional weight or gas to carry. This one worked great. Ran the AC, refrigerator and water pump with all the lights turned on. Was not having a problem at all. When it senses a higher load the rpm's go up.

The 2017 models will weigh as much as 120 more due to changes plus I will have an AC, this alone will add 175-200lbs. How steady is the camper when you raise it off the truck and then pull away? Very stable.  I had no concerns.

Are you happy with the slides performance?  Operates just fine.  Not sure what you would be concerned about.  I have to talk with Ryan or Bill about how to get the manual crank for the slide out to work.  I could not find the motor brake release to allow it to crank out manually.


How do you like the freezer space in the 8 cubic foot refrigerator? Probably more than enough room for us.

I haven't taken any pictures of the camper on the truck yet. Right now it is just sitting on a concrete slab I had installed for it. I have been spending a few hours each day getting familiar with it and how everything works. Last thing was sanitizing the onboard water system. I hemmed and hawed about whether this was needed as we will always be drinking distilled water not from the tank. Onboard water will be used only for bathing, flushing and washing dishes so I was not sure if this was necessary but went ahead and did it yesterday.

Got the camper last Saturday. Truck only settled over the rear wheels 2.75 inches which I thought was phenomenal. Stayed one night at Truck Camper Warehouse (they have 3 sites with full hookups for purchasers to stay and get familiar with their campers).

The 60 mile trip home was uneventful and enjoyable. I did 30 miles on back roads average of 45 MPH and 30 mile on the high way at 65 MPH. Truck got 14-15 MPG on both venues.

All went well till I pulled into my driveway. Took some low hanging branches down from a Japanese maple tree that hangs over the driveway. dry.gif No real damage there.

Then clipped a pine tree also hanging over the driveway on the passenger side with more limbs and needles down. sad.gif No real damage there either).

Then pulling onto the concrete slab I was too close to my garage and clipped the rain gutter with the top bedroom part of the camper. Screwed up front of the gutter and put some good scratches into the side of the caper. ohmy.gif A little touch up paint and it will be good as new. smile.gif

Don't know what happened but I totally lost my situational awareness for the last 150 feet of the trip home. mad.gif I am laughing now but I wasn't last Saturday. laugh.gif

So the camper is ready to go. Just have to get some odds and ends to fully equip. Have commitments most days next week so week after next will probably be our first shakeout cruise for a 2 or three day foray. Thinking about going up to Mexico, NY a 270 mile one way trip taking all back roads and doing a little exploring up there.

Will take pics and post back the results of the first trip.

Still equipping the camper with things. One of the things we want is a propane gas grill for the TC. Lots of stuff out there. Looking at a few like Nexgrill and Smoke Hollow. Has to be small to fit in exterior compartment of Arctic Fox 1140. I like charcoal but I just don't want to be messing with with charcoal and ashes and carrying all that stuff.

Looking at some others with legs to keep from bending down when no table is available when boon docking. Do any of you carry a table for outside use and if so what do you suggest?

What ya got? How do you like it and why?

All opinions and info greatly appreciated.

Our new camper can with one of the Honda 2000 generators. It is a heavy little sucker. Difficult to get into the storage compartment that is supplied for it on our Arctic Fox sad.gif ...but it is what is.

For those of you that do carry the generators with you; how much gas do you carry along and what type of container dot you carry it in. I am a little leary about carrying 2-3 gallons of extra gas. wink.gif

I am testing the generator today for the first time hooked up to the camper to make sure I know how it works and if it works properly. I have not tested the generator yet to see how long it runs on a full tank of gas. This weekend I plan on filling it up in the morning, turning the air conditioner and refrigerator on and probably a few lights to see how it runs and how long it will run on a full tank of gas under a load.

Any tips or suggestion greatly appreciated. biggrin.gif

I think my main concern, in forested country would be puncturing the camper with tree limbs. I had to trim up trees in my driveway to clear the 13' I need.

WILL BE GETTING MY ARCTIC FOX ON FRIDAY. I AM THINKING ABOUT GETTING REPAIR INSURANCE FOR IT. I HAVE LOOKED AT AND HAVE A QUOTE FOR THE GOOD SAM CLUB BUT IT DOESN'T SEEN LIKE THEY COVER A LOT OF STUFF. DON'T EVEN COVER THE HEATER. mellow.gif

JUST LOOKING FOR OTHER INSURANCE AVENUES THAT MAY BE MORE EXTENSIVE AND MAYBE LESS EXPENSIVE.

I AM CALLING MY INSURANCE AGENT TODAY TO FIND OUT ABOUT CRASH DAMAGE INSURANCE ALSO. I'T THINKING IT MAY BE A RYDER ON MY TRUCK INSURANCE?

Good luck in your search and decision making. I will be posting back my findings a feelings after I get to live with the TC a few weekends and have some miles on it. Lots to think about concerning getting it equipped and set up. Again I know I will be overweight. I think the only other options I have is to pull a small trailer loaded with stuff (unfortunately I want to have my boat with me most times) or step up to a 4500. I just hate getting beat up on the depreciation of my 3500 that I just got in February.

I have not been on in awhile and I just saw this today. Sorry. I believe our trucks are identical. with the same payload 4766 lbs. I am adding the Tork Lift bumpers to contact the upper rear leave springs sooner and that is just my opinion. I have talked with the retailer Truck Camper Warehouse extensively. I also wanted to add remote controlled Firestone air-bags and an anti-sway bar. Per their expertise and experience they say I will not need them with the stock configuration of my truck. It was I that insisted on the bumper additions. They have equipped hundreds and hundreds many thousands of TC and truck to carry them over the years so I am falling back on their expertise.

My Arctic Fox weighs 3900 lbs dry. I know for a fact that I will be over the recommended max payload capacity fully loaded and gassed. Nothing I can do about that except step up to a 4500 which I don't want to do.

I am comfortable with this decision as back in the 80' I had a Ford F-250 single rear wheel 8 cly gasser and mounted the biggest Real Lite TC on it. I don't remember the exact figures but I was way way over the GVWR of that that truck. Truck was totally stock with nothing added but handled that big arse camper just fine. This Chevy is a beast.

I'm thinking I may still go with an anti-sway bar but that will happen after I have driven around for awhile.

I know I'll be over the limit but it is what it is. I guess I'm taking a chance but it is what it is.

Looking forward to communicating with you further and leaning on your expertise. Have been out of the camping mode for close to 40 years.

Yes...those rubber mats are heavy but worth every ounce of weight to keep the TC from moving.

Looking at a Northstar 12 STC truck camper with the canister system for black water. Has anyone one her used one of these? Not sure if it is an advantage or disadvantage. Capacity is around 4 gallons and then has to be emptied. Yes you can probably empty in most any toilet anywhere. I am thinking that you still need to have a place to go and empty your grey water so there is little advantage to the cassette/canister systems. wink.gif

Well I looked at some of the newer truck campers. Was looking at F-250's with the camper package. It just seemed that all the campers I looked at we really exceeding the the maximum recommended GVW of those F-250's When we considered gas, water propane and everything that goes into the camper when traveling. I just was not comfortable.

Finding a truck this time of year with everything that I wanted was tough but the dealer did locate one with just about everything I wanted and in some cases more than I wanted.

I think she is a beauty. F-350, SRW, with an 11,000 lb GVW. Shipping weight on the vehicle was 6858 lbs...so I figure I have 11.000 lbs - 6858 lbs = 4,142 lbs load for the camper and all the schit and people should be plenty sufficient. Truck has an 8' bed with a liner. 6.2 litre flex fuel gas engine.

Don't want a super big camper with all the slides and fancy stuff. Had a Real Lite back in the early 80's and it met our needs quite well. Want something sizable enough to be comfortable but not a pain to set up. Looking at Arctic Fox and Northern Lite campers at this juncture.

Has been thirty plus year since out last truck camper so any suggestions as to what to look for and fitting it to the truck would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the vehicle...I think she is nice.
