97 f350 has a stock 12"X12" transmission fluid cooler. usually have had no problems. but on a trip up a 4-5 mile very steep mountain backroad we could smell something that got very hot. transmission fluid does not smell burned. does anyone have advice on transmission coolers?

If you have any leaks at all it could have been oil burning off your exaust with your EGT's getting hotting than normal, sometimes when i'm in a hard pull i can smell mine where normally i don't smell it at all.

Thats true and it doen't mean that you have a leak. It could have been a little oil or other fluid that was spilt while servicing the engine. Even the winshield washer fluid could have leaked a little and that may be what you are smelling. As long as all guages are reading good and no lights are on and all fluid levels are up, I wouldn't worry about it. JMO
