Hi to all reading this as we are getting ready to launch on a trip from southern Ontario to Vancouver Island. Our proposed route will be across southern Ontario and cross the border into Mich.@ Sarnia and thru upper Mich. along the bottom of Lake Superior to Duluth Min. Intend on running along the border states til exiting into Alberta, to visit family then on thru the mountains to Vancouver and across by ferry to the island. Has any one had this sort of route in the past whom might give pointers? Thanks for reading. Eric

Wes, We have gone the full range of RV's and are on our 2nd T/C which I have been upgrading since purchasing. Presently , have onboard Onan 2500 propane geny, 2 deep cycle golf cart batteries, upgraded converter with 4 stage charger , full led lighting replacement, double cooling fans on back side of refer, upgraded water supply system- filtration & pump, plus many more small upgrades. What I desire is keeping the batteries topped up while camping off grid. I am a DIY person whom likes to investigate before investing

Am interested in solar panels to install on the roof of our t/camper. Has anybody gone thru this experience and willing to pas on some info about your experience?

From all of the tire industry info, that my take is to read the tire pressure rating on the tire sidewall and use this pressure setting for full weight rating. In my case my ! ton dually I run my rears @75lbs and my fronts @about 68lbs. I run with my rear air bags @ 45lbs. My Adventurer 106 DBS scales in about 4100 when ready to travel with 2-20lbs of propane and 1/4 tank of water. My 1 ton has a 56 gal. fuel tank so I run on the heavy side for the first half of my fuel load. Run what is printed on your tire sidewalls to be on the safe side.

Mine sat on the rails on the drive home from purchase.  raining and getting dark and the workers there were not highly skilled.  Boy, did the camper feel stable sitting on the rails though. Is this bad to do?  I was thinking of a way to pad the rails so the camper could sit softly on the rails while still having some weight on the floor.

I made 3 cuts in the 4X8 sheet of plywood giving me 4 pieces 2'x4' and then I made a cut in each sheet at the center line 12&1/2" by 3/4" to make the X's. This has worked for going on 4 years . This was my solution for height while loaded and stability while unloaded.

Our first t/c came with a awning add a room that was only used maybe twice and was a carefree unit. It was not able to be used whilst the camper was loaded in our truck as the walls were not long enough to reach the ground and attached to the awning in a mickey mouse way that defied reason . I guess I like simplicity as you needed a ladder to install it properly and have yet to see another in all of our travels. Looking at your picture makes me wonder as the setting is attached to a tow behind trailer not a t/camper. Ours was on the passenger side of a 2009 Travellite mountainstar 1100XLultra. Our truck is a 2007 GMC sierra 3500 cc dually with no lift on the suspension. Before purchasing I would want to see this unit on a t/c mounted on a sizeable truck. A fair amount to invest by a picture not even on a t/camper. Sorry but that is my observation after having had one.

On a recent trip into the upper region of New York state I felt as if the trucks braking was not up to good enough safety. As I run a Banks speed brake and do not do higher speeds with the T/C on, the only time that this occurred was the final stopping at a set of lights or stop sign. I removed the frt. pads and found that they were totally glazed over while the rotors were still clean with no rusting or glaze. After reading and research I decided to replace the rotors with a set of vented and cross drilled replacements. A set of carbon fibre pads were included so I installed and did a brake-in on these new to me items. What I found out so far is that the stopping distance is really reduced from my stock set up and I think that the pads will not be able to glaze up as the drilled rotors will always be shearing the face off of these pads. I don't know if other owners have noticed a reduced stopping distance in their OEM brake systems as age creeps up on their vehicles. This week should tell as planning a outing for about a week of travel.

We have a set of torklift aluminum stairs for our unit and when we unload at a site of our liking I have had to remove one of the steps as the t/c sits about 12 inches lower on its stand. When in the truck bed it sits approx. 36 inches off of the ground. Our steps are a 5 step configuration & seems to be about the right height. If i'm not mistaken torklift has a written scale in one of their brochures that gives dimensions as to height verses stair steps. I hope that this will help you before spending $$$$

I have surfed thru this site often and was taken back by one of the posters as some people actually post because they are in need of a strait answer to a problem they are having and have, in my opinion, been sent away with BS comments by some of the above people because they think that their way is the only way of solving problems. I read and can talk about mechanical problems with the best in the racing fraternity and have been thru many years of RVing with many forms of camping equipment and DO NOT agree with some person ridiculing a newby for asking a question. It is no wonder there are no postings for a long time as people get fed up of the arrogant BS replys. This is my take!

we had a 5th wheel and had air bags which helped the squat after inflating, but since having our 2nd t/c I have kept a minimum of about 5lb when the t/c is unloaded and after loading I bump up the pressure to about 45 lb's and check the ride as they aren't for carrying the weight as much as stabilizing the cornering ability as well as road deviations. Just my take. I would not increase the air pressure in the bags til I loaded the camper and if loading a trailer that is adding weight to the truck. Every combination will give different results as to weight on the truck verses the air pressure in the bags. Experiment! Good Luck

Having a 1ton dually diesel c/c to haul our t/c has been a progression of rv's as we have "progressed" from 5th wheels to our Adventurer 106 DBS. Over many years we owned many gassers and as the 2 footitise materialized we needed more pulling power as well as stability so came the diesels. Our present unit is an 07 GMC 3500 c/c dually with quite a few upgrades and only 75000 miles showing. It is stored during our winters here in Ontario as we presently snowbird in Florida. Replacement for this unit is prohibitive now in full retirement as costs exceed need. I would do the same if I had to as this unit works well as now packaged. Maintenance is the key to longevity with all vehicles. As being a secondary vehicle we are able to use this truck as we wish.

I own a GMC 2007 vintage and put a Banks speed brake unit in it as I was towing a 37' 5th wheel and this system works on the variable vanes within the torque converter and works very well at slowing the unit down. It is adjustable as I use the truck with the bed empty and put the braking system on its lowest settings. Most aftermarket mfg. have good quality products.

We travel to a lot of different areas and have found a variation of restrictions which were asked before checking in. If the reply is that we are not allowed to unload, we continue on in our travels. We had one situation in upper New York state that said if we left it unloaded and didn't return that it would cost too much to get it towed away. YOU THINK!!!! That site was scratched from our list. Overall we have had no problems with unloading to explore the immediate areas.

We are situated in southern Ontario Canada and have used a cover for the last three winters as we snowbird in Florida. I wash and wax in the fall before pulling the cover over the T/C while it is in our truck. Also have a truck cover and we have had some different weather patterns in the past few years. I was impressed at how the stored units have weathered our areas conditions. I use foam pipe insulation on all extruded points on the T/C before installation. In my opinion the savings from having these covered is worth my time as they both come out clean with no mold or residual dirt from the winter snow and early spring rains. If you are interested in a cover search ALL suppliers as some don't work in all conditions.

Just a side note, I cut a sheet of 3/4 plywood into 4 pieces to make up 2 crosses to add additional support when we unload at a camp site. To make up the crosses I cut slots at the centers of each sheet half way thru and cut in handle holes in each piece to grab to locate under the raised t/c. gives full support on top of our mat in the bed and has not slipped that I can report. If you are going to carry a sheet of plywood it should have a double use.

The Cat scale ticket tells the story. Here is what "should" be happening at RV dealerships, is a set of moveable scales be used with the paper print out attached to the sales receipt of each unit as the customer picks up their new unit .It is a no brainer that this format would help all . When we had our last 5th wheel we were at rallies where a dealer actually brought his scales with him and we did a safety seminar which really opened many owner's eyes. The liability issue also is a double edged sword. Knowledge is scary.

I can see that you are in a similar position as we were a few years ago. We purchased a 09 Travellite 1100XL Ultra from a private owner whom was not up to proper maintenance with this unit. Before we could use it I spent nearly a month of daily work stripping off it's skin to replace wet rotted wood framing. I got it completed and did a maiden voyage during a week long rain with great results. We found that we didn't have enough room with our dog and cat to travel as we wanted. We had conversed with Bill @ Truck Camper Wharehouse in New Hampshire before when we were getting ready to sell our 37' 5th wheel and he had quite a few used units on his lot. We stopped by on our way thru and worked a deal on our new to us 06 Adventurer 106 DBS T/C. We went from a wet bath non slide wood frame unit to a dry bath single slide aluminum framed unit with a winter based build generator on board unit that we both could feel comfortable in. Yes we have had a few glitches in the last 4&1/2 years BUT we have been able to get to some incredible camp sites which the 5th wheel could not make. Don't put Lance at the top of the pile as they also have problems if not maintained.

Have been reading your posts about single slide t/c and from my experiences I would not go to any single slide without upgrading to a dually truck. As to your interest into rear view cameras, I bought a unit last year while wintering in Florida and took it home and installed it thinking it would not work very well. Quite a pleasant surprise when the unit works as well as it has. Bought it off of e-bay for under 60 $ The unit came with a 5" monitor[colour] and a night vision wireless camera. Search RV wireless backup camera kit .Hope this will help.

I researched wireless cameras and bought a pkg from Camecho out of Lexington Ky which included a 7" monitor with power supply,and a wireless 12/24 volt camera. I installed the camera above our camper door and fed a supply of 12 volts from our outside door light thru a 3 way waterproof switch. Before leaving I turn on our outside light and use the 3 way to turn off power to the outside light and give power to the camera. The screen is set up on it's stand under our radio and plugs into a 12 volt lighter style supply. It took quite a few adjustments to get the camera elevation where I wanted as the receiver shows a grid as to length from the rear of the camper. The night vison is very good and have not had any problems since the install in May of this year.Total cost of this was under 100$ while other suppliers were 2 to3 hundred $ for something similar.

We down sized a few years back and had a 40 ft. 30 amp extension that was hanging in our garage that I stowed in our truck bed, which we have used at least once on every outing traveling these last few years with both t/c's . Happy wife-happy life.

WHEN WE TRADED OUR LAST T/C, THE NEW TO US, A 2006 Adventurer106DBS came with an aluminum 4x4 frame that had been fabricated and was screwed to the bottom of the t/c. When I initially loaded the t/c onto our 1 ton dually I noticed that it had nearly 10" of clearance between the cab roof and under belly of t/c. After returning home I removed this framing and now have about 5" clearance at the clearance lights. Handling was amazing after the removal. That was a return trip from lower New Hampshire to Ontario. Turns out that the previous owner had a newer Ford with a deeper box and needed the clearance for the bed rail tops. Not all campers are built to the same specs.

To the original posting I'm close to my weight limit with my match up of t/c and truck. As a person whom has owned and repaired multiple rv's over my past, I have always been observant of weight of loaded unit and the rubber that is carrying it. Some posters seem to think that their opinion is gospel ,BUT owning and safely operating units, be it any motorized vehicle needs help from others that may have done it before, so lets give the strait info to a person whom asks for advice rather than B---%$#&* opinions. That is the problems of some forums, just my observations. Happy T/C ing.

After reading replies some people have very strong personal replies to ever topic and that tends to make new and perspective t/c owners not return to ask for advice on this forum. If advice is asked a sincere reply without a snide remark is more appropriate. As an owner of many different types of rv's over the last40 years I read most questions and shake my head at some replies as they do not help the newer people getting into t/c lifestyle. This is only my opinion

We usually have to winterize our units unless we take them south to the warmer climates. We have never removed any cushions or bedding from our units, and there have been a lot since the early 70's. Ventilation is the main reason. We have covered our last 3 units. being 2 t/c's and 1 5th wheel. The main objectives are to protect all the water systems from freezing, keep the unit dry inside, and mouse proofing. Good luck as some times these are hit and miss . I have a list posted in the garage that is checked off as I complete for both seasons. Eric
