Truck and Camper Setup: Looking to make first purchase of TC

Hello -
Beginning to research TC's for mostly weekend use - for our small family.
We would be pulling the boat, setting up camp and would like minimal work but plenty of convenience!

Would really like to ask for recommendation's on best models for starting out - have done a significant amount of research online and after lurking on the boards - seems a trip out west for purchase will be important.

Also - would welcome thoughts on new vs. used.

We are in Illinois and there isn't much information to be had here.

Thanks!

To start, what is the weight of your truck and what is the GVWR? Is it a long box or short box truck? You need this information to determine how much camper you can carry. Once you know that you can narrow down the field to appropriate camper models. There are long box model campers and short box model campers. A long box camper might fit a short box truck but a short box camper is less likely to fit a long box truck - its best to match the two.

Armed with the maximum camper weight and long versus short box the next thing is listing the features you must have and then the nice to have features. Adding features adds weight to the camper so be picky about the must have features.

So once you have your list and know the max weight, etc its time to go shopping. You can check out the Truck Camper Magazine for lots of information, including links to camper manufacturers.

You can also post your list here and I'm sure you'll get lots of good feedback.

There are many choices out there with a wide variety of sizes, weights and features so you should be able to find what you're looking for.

New versus used? If you can find a used camper that fits your list and if its in good shape, buy used. You will have more flexibility if you buy new but it will cost more.

Hope this helps.
