I have a Coleman AC 8000 series, seems to be a very commong AC unit on RV. In addition I have a Cummins Onan LP 2500 KW GENSET. It puts out 2500 KW and about 20.8 amps according to specs.

I would like to run my Coleman AC units from it which draws 15.5 amps. There should be no reason why my AC unit will not run, but as soon as the AC kicks in the unit shuts down. I have had everything shut off except the AC and it still will not run it. I talked with the Onan folks and they say it should run and that it should have about 600 watts left over for lights etc.

Anyone have any insight or have been able to get theirs to run? Thank you.

You may need to install a hard start cap on your compressor, try goggling it

Thanks a lot!!!

http://www.modmyrv.com/2009/05/27/rv-air-c...start-capacitor

The recommended (and most popular) starting capacitor for a 13,500-15,000 BTU RV A/C is the Supco SPP6E boost capacitor.

After going thru 6, yes 6 hard start units, one was bad, the others were of varying capacity etc NONE of which worked. Trips to camping world were met with 'hard start', new AC unit, bugger genset (I have an Onan 2500 and that is NOT enough???????).

Been looking to solve this for YEARS and not a single recommendation or suggestion has worked.

That said: PROBLEM SOLVED!

I am a engineer (retired) and this has gnawed at me for years, and yes I will wake up at 3 am thinking of it and I did and the other morn I headed to the barn.

I disconnected shore power, make sure my battery cutoff was turned to on and turned on my low fan on the AC...fan comes on...turn on high fan...fan comes on...turn on low fan AC...comes on...turn on HIGH fan AC...comes on! Ice cold air is blowing in the early summer morn. I hit the prime switch for the Onan genset and then flipped to run, genset comes on and AC unit is blowing in the AC wind, something it had never done. I go outside and hook to 110v shore power in the barn, come in and kill the genset. AC working off of 110v something it had never done.

WHY? Who really knows I am not a Electrical Engineer, but I did know the Hard start was not doing it, but in those 2 Group 31 Odyssey batteries together they can provide 400+++ amps on start up, then you just switch over to your choice of 110v or genset.

NOTE: The AC always worked off a RV camp 30 amp circuit. But out at my barn the electrician I PAID to put in a 30 am circuit only put in a 20 and wired it for 20 in spite of charging me for 30 amp wire and breaker. The 20 amp in the barn will run it but not start it!
