Truck and Camper Setup: Northstar 850 on a 12 Ford F350

Hello, New guy here. Forgive me for jumping right in and asking for advice. However these types of forums are great for getting down to earth info and I think as long as you give back, it??¢ā??¬ā??¢s OK to ask for a little up front??¢ā??¬??¦advice that is. So I am shopping for slide in truck camper. I would like a pop up style. I would like an inside toilet, outside shower, AC and the other basics. I have a 2011 Ford F-250 Diesel 4X4 long bed. I would like to stay as light as possible but I want a quality product. I live in south Florida so as a rule, truck campers are not to be found. I have only looked at a couple in person and the following on line: Palomino, Northstar, Outfitter, Hallmark and Phoenix. I am not asking anyone to bash a product but would like an honest pros and cons type of reply. Also any other brands I should consider. Thanks.

Favorite Truck Camper(s): ulta lite 1200lbs to me is not lite
Type and Brand of Truck(s) Owned: f150 ford
Type of Tiedowns used: home built to frame
Truck and Camper Setup: looked for something really lite, nothing on the market. Wanted something less than half of the rated weight load for a 1/2 ton truck.Like to be realistic about weight capacities. Built a totally aluminum unit. 8 ft. box, 80 in. wide, 80 in. high. With door, windows and AC and jacks I can still left one end by hand and I'm over 60. I'm guessing at this point unit must be around 200 lbs.

Try Capri Truck camper and Camplite.

Good luck and happy camping. Tom

Hi,

We have a 2007 version of your truck with a short bed and have hauled a Palomino Maverick M-6601 all over the US..

It has AC, Microwave, TV, Cable ready, AM/FM/CD..and has a bathroom and shower plus an outside shower...

Hauls well, but do suggest getting air bags..makes a huge difference in the tow..

Hope this helps.

Have you considered a hard side pop-up? I have the same 2005 version of your F-250 (only 80,000 miles). In 2011 I purchased an Alaskan 10ft camper with all of the amenities you are asking for including a solar panel and a 2 battery set-up for some heavy duty boon-docking. I also added a Hellwig sway bar (rear only) and a set of Firestone air bags. My wife and I absolutely love the camper and have had it all over the western part of the US. The hard side and the hydraulic raise and lower system are unbeatable. Next week we are headed to Kalispell Montana to get a Stable Lift system installed.

Oh I hear ya. Most guys on these forums are stright forward. Most times you just need to sort out passion from facts and opinions. But all three are helpful as long as you can sort them smile.gif

No intent on hurting someone all i want to say is there are hundreds of options available to make choice from and different people will put different inputs as per there likes or dislikes and at the end might confuse the person at the end, and its always you who can decide whats good and as per your own requirement.

So here is little update. Last weekend went and looked at the Northstar 850SC. Looks like a nice product and has all the features I want. Since my last post, I have upgraded the truck to a F350 Dually so payload is no longer an issue. Anybody have any feedback on the Northstar?

Never owned a Nothstar but I do have a truck camper rating guide from RV Consumer Groups that I could check if you like.

That 350 Dually can haul the world on it's back. I too run a 350 Dually diesel. I have a Host Rainier double slide.
For cold weather camping I say stick to a hard side. Major considerations are internal amenities which includes eating, personal hygiene, temperature control, lighting, etc.
I thought when I first purchased I would use it around a dozen times per year. My track record is going to double that. We are having a blast
Have fun!
