Not following your line of thinking.  If you have a Lance and a normal pickup truck, the camper overhang (bunk I presume) should clear the cab with only a bed mat in the bed.  I've never seen one that didn't clear.  I've seen some close ones where the owners had to add a sheet or two of plywood, but never a box.

You start elevating the camper 5 or 6" off the bed, you'll have handling nightmares as well as tie down issues.  With a hard side vertical Cg is important when it comes to roadability.

I didn't say I have a lance. Not sure where you got that? I'm not new to towing or hauling heavy loads. Just looking to see what others have for clearance so I can get a better idea of what I need.

So I need to build a box for my camper to sit on so the over hang will clear the rood of the truck. I've looked in the owners manual for the camper but it doesn't say. From the bottom of the camper to the over hang is about 40". From the bed of my truck the the top of the lights is about 42". I'm thinking if I build a 5-6" box for the camper to sit on, that should give me 3-4" of clearance. Just looking to see what everyone else has on average for clearance between the roof of your truck and the over hang of the camper. Thanx.

My camper is mainly gonna be used as a beach camper, maybe one or two camping trips a year. I carry everyday, but obviously when I'm on the beach I don't have my gun on my, but still have it with me. Having a lock box in the camper to be able to lock stuff in is gonna be a must!

How many of you have installed some kind of a lock box and where inside your camper? Something for locking up valuables or firearms that can easily/quickly accessible if need be. Thanx for any ideas. Adam

I'm thinking I should be ok with the two big things of Damprid I put in it, and leaving the two roof vents open a little. The guy I bought it from winterized it for me when he delivered it to me.

Looking for some tips and any advice. A few months ago I picked up my first truck camper. The guy I bought it from delivered it to my house, showed me everything on it, and winterized the water system for me. This past weekend I removed all the old cracking, peeling silicone from all the seams and around the windows. Then I resealed everything. I did all that on saturday, then on sunday I covered it with a tarp. I left the two roof vents open a tiny bit, all the draws and cabinets open, and put a couple buckets of Damprid in it. I've been told I should also leave a couple of the windows open a little also. Also would it be a good idea to take all the cushions out and put them in my basement? Sorry for the long post. But just looking to see what works and what everyone else does when it comes to putting there camper away for the winter. Thanx

I ended up going with the Herculiner. Yesterday was really nice out, so I scraped all the old peeling paint off. Not knowing how much I would need, I bought the two quarts Autozone had. I bought a couple cheap brushes and small cheap rollers, along with a couple small plastic paint pans. I started on the bottom since that had nothing on it, it was just plain wood. I used the brush to do all the corners and spots I wouldn't be able to get the roller. The 2qts was enough to get two good coats on the bottom and one on the sides. I'm very happy with the way it came out! I do wish I had just bought the gallon can that was was there, cause I do have some spots that I didn't get.

Yah the stuff that is pealing off looks kinda like a bed liner type of stuff. I'll go with bed liner. I'd like to do it this weekend but, I don't think the weather is gonna cooperate.

All depends on what it's made out of.  I would assume it's plywood (being old).  I'd get the peeling paint off and coat it with a brush on or roller on bed liner like Herculiner, both the sides and the bottom.

Yes it's plywood. I didn't even think of bed liner. That would seal it better then regular paint.

The camper I just bought is 24 years old. I'm not gonna be using it this year, but would like to start some preventative maintenance. The previous owner took great care of this camper. But the paint on the box? The lower part of the camper that sits in the bed of the truck, is pealing off. Before I wrap the camper and put it away for the winter, I'd like to sand and repaint/seal the box of the camper. What would be the best paint/sealer to use?

No truck yet. I'll be picking up a truck over the winter/spring time. I figured getting a camper first would make it easier. This camper only weights 1200lbs! So I'll probably get an F150.

New guy here. Not new to camping but, I finally bought my first camper. Just picked up an 1992 Six-Pac slide in. The guy I bought it from bought it new off the lot in 92, and took great care of it! Every thing works as it should. He hauled this camper in a ford ranger. I'll be picking up a ford f150 to put it in. It's small but it will be perfect for me and my dog. I'm planning on using it mainly as a beach camper. Bare with me as I will probably have many questions! Thanx in advance! Adam

P.S. I'd add pics, but for some reason they aren't attaching?
