I am new to the camper world so I have many questions like, when you are camping is it alright to unload your camper and still use it? Would it be reasonable to run a 12 to 16 inch reciever extention on a catogory 4 hitch, when pulling a 25 ft. boat roughly 5000 lbs. with apr. 500 tounge weight?
*

I'm pretty sure it is up to the campground as to weather or not you can unload your camper. I know parks like the KOA don't like it.

As for the hitch extension I'm not sure. I was going to make my own hitch extension. I know I will only be towing my motorcycle. There is not alot of weight there.

Im no expert on this stuff. All I can do is share what I do. I hope this helps.

Welcome to the group Johnny, I have Firestone Ride Rites and Happyjac tie downs on my 1989 F-250 SC 2WD pickup. I carry a Lance 780 which is 11'3" in length and with stock tires, it handles like a dream. I think you will be happy with the same set up. Good Luck, Bob

Bob, I was wondering what air pressure do you usally run in your air bags.

Hi Folks,

On New years Day I installed new airbags on the truck. I went with the Air-Lift brand. Installation was easy. On the 2500 Silverado there is a lip where the wheel well is welded together. That is where I installed the schrader valves. That was the only drilling required to do the job. It was pretty easy aligning the airbags since they have you use already made trheaded holes for the top bracket. The directions were pretty easy to follow. I'm a slow reader so the job took me a little longer. I had it done in about three hours. It was a lot of crawling in and out from under the truck. I could have organized better.

The truck performed fine without these airbags however I have more confidence for the longer trips. They really do take a bunch of stress off those springs. I love that the truck can set as if there is no load at all.

I hope this helps anyone in the market for airbags.

Hey All,

I pray everyone has had a great Christmas and will have an awesome New Year celebration. I wanted to let you all know that I posted some pics of my rig on Facebook. Sorry I don't know how to do one of those fancy links. You can just search for Dan or Daniel Clark from Las Cruces, NM. You will know it's me because my profile pic has my goofy face with the camper in the backround. I hope to see you there!

If you're talking about resealing the windows (which should be done every few years anyway), you need to pop the windows out (take out mounting screws, possibly a staple or two as well), scrape them down thoroughly, then use butyl putty tape along the window flange. Pop the window back in place, tighten down the screws, and then run a bead of acrylic caulking around the outside of the window. If you use silicone containing caulk, nothing will ever stick again, and you'll never get it loose.

I dealt with small areas of wood rot with a special anti-rot liquid I bought at Home Depot or Lowes. Comes in a big plastic bottle--might be made by Elmers (the glue people). I have also used fiberglass resin in larger areas where I couldn't remove the damaged wood. In those instances I drilled small holes through the wood, then did my best to "inject" the liquid resin into the holes and impregnate the rot areas. The old camper held up for another 3 years before I sold it off.

Hi All,

I hope everyone has been enjoying some good camping. I have been working away on mine. This weekend I finished the roof getting everything re-sealed and replaced brittle plastic parts. I used the goopy white paste looking stuff that turns into rubber. Sorry I forget the brand name of the stuff. And replaced the A/C cover with one of those universal ones. The bathroom vent needed a new fan and plastic vent for the skylight. So now it is time to start working on caulking the side around the windows and edges. Can anyone please tell me what they use? Will regular caulk work like what people use on thier house? I'm also getting close to start some wood repair. I was just going to clean up the rotted stuff and coat it with fiberglass and resin. Any feedback on this idea and these questions would be helpful. Take it easy.

Greetings from the beautiful Southwest.

I was wondering what is the best for sealing up my truck camper. I have a 1986 Lance 840 / 9.6 truck camper. It sat un-used for many years with no maintenance getting done. If it's a plastic part, it's super brittle. But for now with the rainy season coming I need to seal it up at the seams. I'm looking for any and all advice on what products to use and how to apply them. Thanks so much in advance.

Hello everyone,

I just was given a 1986 Lance 480 / 9.6 camper. For the past 8-10 years it has been a mouse condo for someones backyard. Everything amazingly still works in it! mice have been evicted and I am disinfecting it as well. I'm looking for suggestions on what to replace the mattress with. Would a double size mattress work? I know there is that angle cut on the one side. I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Thanks to all who gave some advice here. I am now a happy camper! I added a 4 inch memory foam topper. It's actually 2.5 " of memory foam and 1.5" of micro fiber cover. I found a great deal for a hundred bucks at a local discount store. Thanks again everyone!

Hi there,

Have you considered fiberglass? I too have an older camper. It's a 1986 Lance and lots of the wood has served it purpose. I was considering coating it all with some fibrglass and resin. I have not yet looked at thickness of the fiberglass to use. If you do this be you understand how to properly mix the resin and hardener. That stuff can get super hot if you use too much hardener. I hope this helps you out.

I am re configuring my camper. I removed the table from it as I felt it simply took up too much room. If you have a need for the table please contact me. You can call me or just drop me a line here. The table top is in excellent condition as is the stand (pole). It came out of a 1986 Lance 840 / 9.6. wink.gif

While we never got mice, our OEM mattress was moldy from water leakage issue of prior owner. In our case, simply moved in a new air mattress--the big, boxy ones.  I've had to patch it a couple of times in the last two years, but it sure has been comfortable, once I added a couple of inches of memory foam.

In an earlier rig, we ordered a custom cut chunk of 4" high density foam. It's not an inexpensive proposition, but it does beat the daylights out of a "custom RV mattress." If you go this route, don't go cheap, but the best density foam you can afford, and do the memory foam trick on top.  We once bought the less expensive foam and wound up "sleeping in a trough" when the foam broke down where the bodies lay.

Hey, I appreciate the feedback and good advice. What do you think about a futon mattress. I was going to look into those.

Very Cool! I spent Sunday night testing my camper in my friends yard. I just got this thing and have it disinfected enough to sleep in it. It sat for about 8 years in someones back yard. Everything has been cleaning so far. Nothing major to repair. AC, stove, toilet, all work still. I have a harley too and an ATV so once this camper is where I need it to be then a trailer will be the next project. Thanks for posting! Ride safe! Camp safe!

I just installed Happijac tiedowns and they are real nice. I have a silverado with a lance camper. Maybe check Happijac and see if they have anything to solve your problem.

I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab and am totally confused what slide in will fit. I found a 1995 Fleetwood Angler - 1480lbs.... but it appears too long? The camper would end past the tailgate if gate left down?? sad.gif
*

I recently received a 1986 Lance, 480 / 9.6. I'm not sure what the weight of it is. My truck is a silverado 2500HD Duramax with a standard bed. With the tailgate down it measures something like 8' 4". The camper is built for an 8' bed so the camper hangs out about an extra 24". This changes the angle of the rear tiedowns. Some say those tiedowns are to keep the camper from bouncing up and down. The tiedown points on the camper its self may need to be changed. I think the important thing is how will your truck handle and ride. Will it sag in the back? Can you safely tiedown the camper? Maybe you will have to add airbags to the rear suspension. If you do this yourself you are looking at about $300.00 addition to your truck. This is just my experience and some things I considered when I got my camper. The camper was FREE so I was bound to make it work. I'm not sure it would have worked with a silverado 1500. So having the 2500 made it an easier decision. I hope this was helpful to you.

QUOTE(Jeep4Christ @ Aug 21 2009, 10:33 PM)
Hi I am new to the forum (I am happy I found it not a lot of stuff that I have found for cabover campers yet).  I tried to do a search but I cant easily find anything on what I would like to ask.

My issue is that I have a tripod camper jack that has broken teeth on its gears.  When it gets enough weight on it it just slips and doesnt lift anymore.  My issue is that I would like to be able to take it off my truck so I can use it and also work on my camper.

Question number 1:  The gears in the jack look like they would be fairly easy to replace, but I have not been able to find anything in the way of replacement parts for the jacks (which is a bummer as jacks are expensive).  Is there any place that carries parts like this?

Question number 2:  I can not afford to buy a jack at the moment.  Is there places that rent them?  I have checked on Ebay and Craigslist for cheap jacks but havent found anything as of yet.

Question number 3:  (this one is a little off topic but maybe someone can guide me as well)  My camper has all the electrical wires all "bird nested and not hooked up to anything.  I have no clue where to start, nor do I know how to run new wires if i wanted to start fresh (there is no apparent access panels inside or outside that I have found any wiring (I assume I will have to do major demo to find them...I wish I had plans or something for this old camper  sad.gif ).  Pretty much at this time my camper is just a place to rest my head with a stove.  I would like to change that, but there isnt really anyone that I know of that has a cabover camper and knows anything about them.  I guess if there isnt anything helpful I can find I might gut the camper and redo it into something creative smile.gif.

Thank you for your time smile.gif.

I'm also new here. I would try to remove the gear myself and look for a machine shop to see if they could refabricate it. As for renting a jack I would try one of those equipment rental places. They usually rent all kinds of stuff like Bobcat tractors to cement mixers. They may have some kind of jack that would work. As for the electrical you can get a multi-meter and run continuity tests to see where what goes. Contact a dealer for your brand of camper to see what they can supply in the way of wire diagrams. I hope this helps.

I'm on my second Chevy Dooley (2002 and 2006) with the Duramax-Allison option and have nothing but great things to say about the trucks.  I've owed Fords along with Chevys over the years hauling truck campers in the beds but with the Duramax-Allison option you really can't go wrong with the Chevy.  Both of my Chevy doolies were used (both under 10K miles when purchased) so I was able to get around the often complained about high entry price Chevy trucks typically bring when new.

I know quite a few current Dodge and Ford owners and after a couple of beers they've admitted I'm better equipped overall (especially with the Tow/Haul feature when ascending or decending steep grades) then they.  When fully loaded with the truck camper (5K lbs), hitch extension and 16' open car trailer with toys loaded and in place (7K lbs) I'm just over 19K lbs gross.  I've driven many miles without a trace of serious problems many other brands have found when under heavy use (ie: driveline failures).

In the end, I'll most likely buy another new-used Chevy with the Duramax-Allison combo if the General is still making them when the time comes and I don't move up to the Gulfstream Supernova 6331 Super Class C by that time.  Good luck in your truck search efforts and let us know what and why you decided after you've finalized your purchase.....
*

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Bought my 2005 Silverado 2500HD Duramax 4X4 with just under 20k miles. It has never failed me yet and the truck is all stock. I can't imagine if I ever decided to unleash the beast inside it with the aftermarket add-ons. My friend has a 3500 dually and the only difference is stability. Power and suspension have seemed very similar. I hope this helps.

I am getting ready to trade up for a Lance 971.  This is the 9'-11" model with dry bath.  Marketing material states this requires a long bed truck.

I currently have a F-250 diesel crew cab short bed, and have 2 questions.

1.  Is it possible to load and transport this camper on my short bed just to transport it home since it was designed for a long bed.  Most dealers we found are several states away.   I am asking because we have found some good deals on the 971 that we want, but may be some time before we can trade up to a long bed for permanent installation of camper.

2.  Since I am also going to upgrade to a long bed truck, I have concerns that this 3,400 pound trailer may be top-heavy for a single rear wheel 250, so does this mean I need to shop for a dully rear wheels?

3. Since I may end up with the camper before the truck upgrade, do most dealers include the truck prep in price or is this extra.  Since I may need to "ship" the camper or transport with a different truck, will any local dealer prep the new truck for this camper.
Thanks,
*

I am new to the truck campers. I was recently given a 1986 840 / 9.6 Lance camper. This one is made for a longbed. My truck is a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4X4 with the Duramax. It is all stock and has the standard bed. I do not have air bags or any suspension upgrades. I have only moved it once from A to B. The roads were narrow and windy. My truck handled fine and sat level and there was no bottoming out. This camper sticks out a couple feet extra but presents no real problems. The front tie downs should be the same but the rear ones will be what you will have to look at. As for towing with it, I can't realy say. I would have to go with the airbags at that point just for general purpose. the duallys will make a difference. I am not sure if you will have to do that or not. I hope this helps. Best of luck to ya!
