Full Version: Can I use a shorter camper on a long bed truck?

Hi all,
Sorry if these are obvious questions, I'm totally new to this. I have owned & driven RV's but not campers.

Someone is giving away for free a Starlight 1000 camper. It looks to be a short bed, but I'm having the guy measure it. I have a Chevy Silverado 2500 Diesel Turbo extra cab long bed truck.

1) Will this camper work if it's too short? I know you can install a longer camper over a shorter bed, I've seen it. But not sure if it works the other way around. It has something at the back that does hang down. I included a picture.

2) He said it doesn't seem to have any jacks. This may be totally basic (again, why I'm here) but what do I need to do to get it onto the truck? Will I need to buy/install some kind of lifts? I would not want to keep it on the truck all the time, and I have space to store it.

3) It has graffiti on it. Can this kind of what looks to be aluminum siding be painted over?

4) Someone was living in it at his house (he purchased a repo.) So, hopefully it doesn't leak, etc. Seems to have the fridge, propane tank, etc. It was plugged in. Anything else big I should look for? I know I will probably need to add/improve some things. But, what the heck, if it works it's free!!

Thanks,
Pam

You could do this however the camper weight would not be balanced, that is to say most of the weight would be behind the wheels and this could cause you some handling problems while driving. I noticed it has a drop down at the back This means the camper would not snug up to the front of you truck bed so that would mean longer tie down chains. You would raelly want to install jacks for loading and unloading. Also measure between you wheel wells to make sure the camper will slide between them.

Hi, Thanks for your feedback... will measure it all. It's not that great, I went to look. People had been living in it. But, it is getting me looking at campers now so... wink.gif

Look at this. They are kinda pricey but they make a great camper.
