I built my own tie down mounts and the cost was very low, because I used scrap metal that I had laying around.... I have less than $30.00 dollars in these!

Here's some pictures in this thread.

http://www.truckcamperforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2441

When I buy a F-250 or F-350 diesel, I plan to build another set and use square tubing the next time!

As for using ratchet straps... Make sure you get straps that are rated for the load and you shouldn't have any problems!

I used to drive a tractor trailer with a 48' flatbed... I've hauled pipe, metal and all kinds of other material and used ratchet straps to strap down the load.

Next time someone is on the interstate and see's a tractor trailer with a flatbed, look at the trailer and you will most likely see the load with ratchet straps over them.... The only time I didn't use ratchet straps was if I was hauling farm tractors... We used chains and ratchet binders.

Thanks for the tips. Any advice on choosing a truck? I'm looking toward a F150 crew cab, do I need a long bed?

I have a F-150 Super Cab short bed... I have to leave my tailgate down and the camper comes to the edge of the tailgate.... I also have to use an extension hitch when pulling my boat... I own a welding shop, so I make my own and sell them in my area.

Yeah, a long bed is better... But a lot of people have a short bed.

Ever seen a Crew Cab with a long bed ? smile.gif ... I know several around here that has one, and they're not good to take to Walmart! LOL

QUOTE(dustboy @ Oct 20 2014, 05:41 PM)
I have to park in San Francisco on a regular basis so shorter is better. Will a 3/4 ton handle a whole lot better than 1/2?

I have a 1/2 ton F-150... When I haul my TC, I pull a pontoon behind... I had to install airbags!

So, if you can, I would get a 3/4 ton... Also, diesel trucks are great!

I've been lookin' for a nice used F-250 Super Crew diesel short bed or long bed.... Hard to find one in this area... Most used ones have a lot of miles!

You can see my setup in this thread.

Welcome to the Forum!!!... Hope you enjoy it here and hope you stay around and post often!!! smile.gif

There is just so many to choose from!

If I was new to truck campers and was planning to buy a truck camper, this would be my first pick!

http://www.livinlite.com/truck-campers.php

All Models

When I get ready to buy another TC, I'll be buying one of those!

The reason:.. They use aluminum and you won't have to worry about rot, plus they're ''Ultra Lightweight''.

For a used camper.. Look at the RV Trader Online.

Also, look on Craigslist, but watch out for ''scams''... If you have a local trade-in-sell like we have, I would look there too.

Also when buying used, try and buy from a ''private seller'' instead of a dealer... You will get a much better deal!... I bought my Sunlite from an older couple and we have been really happy with it.. It also has a bathroom, so that was a big plus! smile.gif ....We've had it for 8 years now!

Good-luck!

You're welcome on the pictures!

Nice lookin' truck for sure!... Can't wait to see the camper on it!

No mater the load, you got the truck to haul it!.... Do you plan on pulling anything (boat) behind when you have the camper loaded ?

Kentucky is a one tag state too... But they let them buy an extra tag for the camper.

Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Good-luck with everything!

Question:
How do other truck camper owners display tags on their rigs?

I know a few guys in our County that has a TC that hangs off the back.

They bought an extra set of tags... (both have the same tag number, but I'm sure you knew that) tongue.gif

They have one on the truck and mounted the other one of the camper... They just leave the one on the camper mounted.

Check and see if they will let you do that!

Hope that helps!

No elec. jacks. They are some kind of pump jacks so not sure the drill idea will work.

They must be ''hydraulic jacks'' ?

I've never used any like that, but I've heard people talk about them around my area and they don't like hydraulic jacks.

Have you used the jacks yet to raise/lower the camper ?

EDIT:

Here's a thread I found on here about hydraulic jacks that a member has on a TC.

Yeah, you would be surprised what a good cleaning would do! smile.gif

If you want the outside to shine, give it a good wax job... First use paste wax then use a buffer... Then buy some Turtle liquid ice wax and go back over it... You don't need to use a buffer with it.

The liquid ice don't have any residue!... I do mine like that once a year... When I go camping, I always have people ask me what type of wax I use, because of the shine.

I once had a woman ask me while camping if I would wax her camper!... I said no, I'm on vacation! smile.gif
Can't tell, but do you have electric jacks ?.... If not, did you know that you can use a 1/2" drill to raise/lower the camper... You can make an adapter for the drill out of a socket!

I'll post a pic if you need to see mine.... It sure saves a lot of time!

There are some about an inch back from ware they are now.  Some in the middle and one set all the way back ware the bath room is.  It has pushed up on the driver side, and some on the pass side.  Broke the water seal and got some water damage from it.  I was shocked to see they used OSB on every thing, and its not water proof glue. Once that water hits its just falling apart.  But its only two small parts. Got some 2x8 yellow pine to run down the bottoms and mount the jacks off that.  Should spread the load out.

QUOTE(dubob @ Oct 9 2014, 08:53 AM)
Originally I WAS thinking about getting a longer trailer and just haul some things on it behind the TC.  However, most of my fishing trips are to Utah State Parks and Federal campgrounds.  There are very few of those facilities in the country, let alone in Utah, that offer 70 foot pull through sites.  The reality is that I have to be able to squeeze the TC, the boat, and the truck into a 40 foot (or less), single wide site without parking on the grass.  The other consideration was the total overall length of all three units.

Special permits are required in Utah if you are over 65 feet.  Some other western states allow 70 and even 75 feet, but at home it's 65.  If all I wanted to do was haul a couple of quads, I think I would have gone with the longer trailer.  But throwing a 20 foot or longer boat package into the mix makes the short trailer a better fit - for me.

*

OK Bob, I understand now!... I forgot about your Tracker boat... Sorry!

We have a Federal campground in KY and we camp there the most and really like it!... And yeah, at this campground, they won't let you get on the grass!

We always get a single site and the driveway is short on some sites... I always unload my camper and I have to find a site with a long blacktop driveway to fit the camper, pontoon and truck!

Keep us posted on your ''new setup''! smile.gif

Nice looking trailer!... Question: why not get a longer trailer to haul stuff on the back ?

I've seen some haul jeeps, ATV's etc... I also noticed you have a hitch on the back!

I wonder if the trailer will sway since its short ?... The camper looks nice on there too!... Let us know how it rides and how you like it when you go on a trip!.... Never know, I may do the same some day! (just kidding) biggrin.gif

Nice looking camper!... I see that you have 4 jacks.. My hard-side TC only has 3 jacks, but I have another one and made the mounting plate... I'll put the other jack on this winter.

My first TC was a pop-up... I like the low profile on a windy day! smile.gif

Thanks for posting the picture!, Yeah my wife says I have too many toys also, and I'm looking around to buy a smaller boat for small lakes! biggrin.gif

I've never had a title with the truck campers that I have owned... I like a TC because you don't have to license them or pay tax on them! smile.gif

Post a picture of your TC.

I found that the covers are too hard to put on and take off, then have to find a place to store it while I'm using the camper!... Try and put a cover over a camper on a windy day!

And like Bob said, You need to make sure the camper doesn't have anything sharp so the cover doesn't get cut.... I have a Winegard Crank Up Satellite Dish on top of my camper and that caused some problems!... I had to put something soft on top of the dish.

My cover didn't last two years!

So, here's what I did!... Cost me $1,600 and free installation... Plus, I can keep the pontoon in it too!

I don't have a truck yet.  I wanted to find out how heavy the camper is before I look for a truck.

Welcome to the Forum!!!... Hope you enjoy it here and hope you stay around and post often!!! smile.gif

That camper doesn't look like its a heavy camper.... It looks like my SunLite TC and I haul it with a F-150 and pull a pontoon boat when we go on a camping/fishing trip.... But, I'm in the market for a F-250 or F-350 diesel.

QUOTE(Busybee1952)
I think I'm going to put it on a trailer and pull it.

You mean mount the TC on a trailer and haul it around like that ?

Then you will have more weight because of the trailer... You will need a good size diesel truck to haul all of that around!.... Plus, you will have extra tires (trailer) to keep up with.... If you have the TC on a trailer, then you can't pull a boat, etc...... Then why don't you buy a travel trailer ?

If I was you, I would buy a diesel truck and haul the camper!.... Or, if the camper doesn't weigh all that much, then buy a 1/2 ton truck (gas) like a F-150 etc..etc... I have Firestone Airbags on my truck and they help a lot!

Here's a picture of my camper on a F-150 and pulling a pontoon boat... (My camper is similar to yours and isn't heavy at all and mine even has a bathroom)

I mounted a board on ''each side'' of the camper and put carpet on them... I also mounted a board on the front of the camper.

Having the boards on the camper helps when loading the camper... I just watch out the back window when loading and the boards guide the camper in place between the wheel wells.

The boards also keeps the camper from moving side-to-side.

Hello all,

I'm looking at truck campers and find that out of 18 possibles I've narrowed it down to seven due to the capacity of my truck.

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 long bed extended cab v-10 with a payload of 2k.

It looks like no matter what I pick I'll be a bit overloaded.

So what are your opinions of the following.

Northstar Liberty

Lance 825

Lance 865

Adventurer 80RB

Northern Lite 8.5Q lite

Northern LIte 9.6 lite

Travel Lite 800X

Thanks, Kevin

Welcome to the Forum!!!... Hope you enjoy it here and hope you stay around and post often!!! smile.gif

All good campers in your choice!... I would also look at Sunlite truck campers!.. I have a Sunlite and its not a heavy camper and it has a bathroom... I haul my TC with a F-150 truck and pull a pontoon boat when we go on a camping/fishing trip.

I have Firestone Airbags on my truck and they help a lot... You might want to think about installing airbags when you find a TC.... When I haul my TC, I never haul it with water in the tank and that helps a lot.

Have a look at these campers!

http://www.livinlite.com/truck-campers.php

That brand will be my next TC because of aluminum!

Here's a member on here that has a Lance 810 for sale!

Good-luck!.... Keep us updated when you find one! smile.gif

Hi, I am new to the forum and just began looking for a Pop Up Truck Camper.  There are so many brands/models out there I don't know where to start. Looking for something to take on overnight trips to the lake.

I would like a pop up with a toilet or porta poti space and an external shower. Refrigerators are much less important to me.  Mostly looking for something to get out of the elements if necessary and my partner really likes having a toilet. The outdoor shower would be a treat since we will likely be fair weather camping most of the time.

I guess size it also a factor I want to go an the smaller end.

Thoughts?

What type of truck do you have ?

Do a search on RV Trader... You can probably find what you're looking for on there...RV Trader does have ''private sellers'' and you can find some good deals from them.

RV Trader Truck Campers

I'd also look on your local Craigslist... Sometimes you can find good deals on there too!

Good-luck!
