I have been RVing for 40 years and have had 8 TTs, 3 5ers ,3 classs Cs and two truck campers . I ran a route conducting 5 to 8 auto auctions a week . I have been around .
We wish to do some traveling and did not want the hassle and expense of pulling a trailer ,so !
We just bought a Palomino 1251 pop up TC . We drive a long bed 2500 Ram ctd . The 1251 is for a short bed . It sits fifteen inches short of the back of the cab . We built a cabinet/tool box into that space , kinda looks like a sleeper cab . It is large enuff to hold 2 camp chairs , a Honda 2,000 , a ladder , jack and more !
Why a 1251 , it is a 2016 with a whole bunch of stuff with it , used twice by previous owner , looks as new . We bought it for six thousand less than he paid new .
we have had it one week but have already been to North Georgia and are going back this Thurs .
My truck is getting seventeen gals to the mallon at 68 MPH .

Good for you, I have one too and I went from a Lance hard side to the popup. Mine is the SS1500 which is the long bed model with the wet bath and my wife and I like it alot. Palomino really made some major changes on the newer ones.

Gone is the 2 piece back end with it's leaks and also gone is the manual crank up top with the interior aluminum pipes. Now, it's push button up and down.

Even new, they are a fantastic bargain for what you gety and the fit and finish is on par with all the rest now.

One thing about any pop up is, it takes a certain kind of person to like them and they aren't for everyone but if you like them, the Palomino is a darn good deal price wise.

We have had ours 2 years now and have had NO ISSUES with it at all.

I don't even know it's on the truck, unlike the Lance that I knew was there all the time. The Lance was top heavy and cumbersome. The Palomino isn't.

Sidecar ,
I have a battery disconnect , every thing [ I think ] still works whether its on or off ? What do it shut off ?
We tend to not be " campers '", we just wander and very seldom stay in the same place more than one night . We stop at yard sales , festivals , little league games , skip and go naked contests . Lots of Wal-Marts , Lowes , cemeteries ,Police stations and a few emergency hospital lots .

The battery disconnect shut off power from the batteries to the everything in the camper. It is there so the batteries will run down more slowly when your camper is stored.

Little heads up on the Palomino. I was going through mine last week winterizing it and decided I'd open up the access below the wet bath (if you have a wet bath that is...

Anyway, the unit comes with a screwed on access panel that I decided to make into a door (for added storage). Glad I did. I found that when it was built, the assembler failed to tighten the P trap securing ring to the shower pan drain, it was just a slip fit and not tightened at all.

We have not used the shower but if we had used it, the drain water would have run out on the floor. As it was, the RV antifreeze I added last year had leaked out as well as the antifreeze I added this year had also leaked out and lifted the vinyl flooring under the shower pan a bit.

I dried it out with a towel and left the door open.

I also tightened the P-trap nuts securely and added a short length of 2 x 4 under the P Trap elbow to insure it would not drop at all.

First 'boo-boo' I've found on the unit so far.

If we had used the shower at all, it would have been a major mess. Thankfully, we have not used it to date.

Everything was tight and secure, I checked all the other fittings throughout the unit.

One thing I was not happy with was the single battery.

I removed the plastic battery box entirely and built a double battery box from 3/4" marine grade plywood to house a pair of Group 24 deep cycle batteries wired in parallel and I used welding cable and solid copper crimp on lugs to connect the batteries, employing the existing lower and upper vents. Gives me twice the capacity and it takes up no more room than the stock plastic box that was huge.

Because I have to sleep on a CPAP machine and my machine is a 110 volt only model, I also added an AIMS Power 1000 watt PSW inverter with remote switching and hard wired it to the 110 volt outlet below the bunk (marked it accordingly) and the inverter fits nicely inside the front compartment, bolted to the wall, along with the double battery box. Everything is out of sight and I put the remote switch by the sink, below the dedicated outlet.

I can run my machine all night with the humidifier on and still have 65% battery left in the morning (according to my SeeLevel battery monitor).
