You will enjoy it. Forest River (Palomino) has come a long way with build quality in the last 10 years. I'm less than 2 hours from the factory and have been there numerous times so I can tell you it's a first class operation.

A bit of a learning curve is involved in raising and lowering the roof. I would suggest turning on your Fantastic Fan on high (with the curtains and windows closed when lowering the top. That 'sucks' in the side curtains and makes lowering the top much easier, and make sure the curtains are INSIDE the aluminum trim piece when the top is completely lowered do they don't get pinched between the aluminum top edge and the body trim piece when the top is fully down.

Have fun, it's a great camper at a reasonable price.

The forum won't allow me to post pictures of my outfit either. unsure.gif

Yes I have the air ride 1000 air bags. Took a couple long trips during hunting season towing the RZR with the camper. Very happy.

Great tip from Sidecarflip, who would know that. This is the reason why hobby forums are so useful, there kinda like going out with clubs to do your hobby rather than by your self.

I just got an information recall from Palomino concerning securement of the camper top in transit.

Seems that quite a few owners are not securing the top properly and the new SS campers are coming with tethered hitch clips (that fit into the punched holes in the tie down brackets at each corner as well....

The lid must be secured in the closed position with tension on each tie-down. The tie down's are adjustable via a threaded rod in each buckle and those buckles must be TIGHT

I use a spring clip (available at TSC) in each buckle after I secure them to insure they don'y pop open......

they say 1/2 ton trucks are too light/ but my 2001 northstar handles well . I have I also have a short box doge ram 1500 regular cab with a 5.9 motor. I have air bags 200lbs and going to put anti-swaybars on. should handle the sway on the curves better. I don't have a issue with the brakes. I got bigger tires with 10 ply

Have no idea what a Northstar weighs but I bet the Palomino's weigh a lot less. I think the 550 weighs about 1200 dry and 1700 wet. I know my SS1500 weighs 1650 dry and 1900 wet.

My Lance weighs 2450 dry and 2900 wet. It's a tank.

I tell everyone the same thing. Weigh your truck empty then put on the camper, fill the FW tank and bottles and go weigh it again. add another 500 pounds for food and junk and subtract the unladen weight from the gross weight and then look at the sticker on your door jamb and see..how overloaded (or underloaded) you really are. You could be shocked or surprised depending.

Never take any builders word for unit weight. The nameplate weight and the actual weight are usually 2 different animals because builders use a nameplate weight that represents the most basic camper with no water, propane, batteries, ac or even cushions inside, IOW a bare bones very basic, no option model and as a rule they don't weigh every unit.

Interesting, your FW tank is only 15 gallons, that isn't much. My Palomino has a 22 gallon tank and I still carry an additional 6 gallons in the backseat, just in case.

Don't take many PTA baths to eat up 15 gallons. That coupled with doing dishes and you could run dry pretty quick in the woods.

I just added a second battery to mine, plus a rearview camera. I actually considered adding 2 extra batteries but the wasn't enough room and a rearview cam helps in seeing who is behind you or keeping an eye on your trailer and it's contents. I pull an open deck trailer with my quad on it and it will be nice to be able to check and make sure it hasn't fallen off....

I have to build a set of steps to access the bunk yet. TC builders never take into account ingress and egress of the bunk and mine is especially hard to get into and out of (for an old fart like me and the wife), so I'm going to build a set of steps that fold, to get in and out. That should do it for me. Maybe a solar panel at a later date, maybe. I carry a Champion 2000 watt inverter on every trip. Very light (68 pounds), thrifty on gas (one tank lasts all weekend in the woods) and keeps everything running smoothly including my convection microwave. Looking forward to a few trips this summer. I like to get away and relax in the woods as much as possible.
