Originally purchased back in March,05 to provide power while I built the home I still live in. Rather than rent power poles and electricity during the build I elected to buy the Honda which I used when needed for 9 months. The unit was bought new and has all the original paperwork. OTD cost was 2800. I have run and serviced this unit from day one, it will start in 2 too 3 pulls and run smoothly for as long as it has gas. One look at this unit and you will agree it's in perfect shape. I will let it go for 1200 cash. Buyer will be required to pick unit up, I cannot deliver. I live near Lake Elsinore in the city of Wildomar. Respond to add through this post.

Well it's out. Take a look at the new Granite from Rugged Mountain. I am hoping for a more comprehensive review in the future but for now it looks like they hit the mark. I really like the departure they have made from the standard truck camper. With a few changes and a couple tweaks this unit could attract a lot of attention. I prefer the bath room and the dinette in the Granite over the offering's from the STC by Northstar. The tank size also makes more since in the Granite. There is little doubt that Rex, owner of Northstar has paid close attention to the criticism his product received from Truck Camper Magazine. It will be very interesting to see if the next model year STC addresses there concerns and if The Granite improves on an already good 1st attempt.

Thanks skyhammer, someone needed to to put the "buzz kill" in his place. This sight did at one time have more interest but as all of you know, websites like this one need a constant source of input with interesting information. Once a site acquires an intolerant know it all it's future becomes uncertain. I stopped posting mainly because I am working 70 hours a week and simple have no time. The constant abuse from one individual was my second reason. I still occasionally visit the site but I always take a few minutes to see what's new at Mike's site, Truck Camper Adventure. Mike is retired and very active in the world of TC's. His site reflex's the amount of time he works on it. For those of you that are new to this site, skyhammers contributions to this site have continually been the best post's. The experience and knowledge of so many subjects skyhammer possesses is truly remarkable. Some people listen to EF Hutten, I listen to skyhammer.

The word from TCM is that Rugged Mountain will be previewing a new larger model in May. I spoke with the company and was assured they are working hard to make there May release date. I can't wait to see how there offerings stack up against Northstar's STC. Offering a wood framed, non slide 11-12 footer with a thoughtful interior lay out as well as the right weight for today's 1 ton diesel crews and a price that won't choke us blue collar types should attract many old school camper types like me. My fingers are crossed.

My 2016 3500 GMC has both the tow mode and the exhaust brake and it works very well. I can come down 395 out of Bridgeport, down to Mono lake and never hit the brake. Fully loaded I am some where around 18K. IMO as a truck driver, jakes are like turbos, free braking and free hp, love those diesels.

I recently read an article provided by Truck Camper Magazine where they were testing front struts on a Lance. Back in the day these were commonly used but nowadays not so much. Lance is the only builder still endorsing them according to the article. I think the above tips will be your best remedy but the addition of the struts may provide a little more help. The article is interesting and provides both the pro's and con's of the product. The overall opinion of the product was mostly positive. Good luck

Hopefully you have already ordered your new camper. The 2019 models appear to be going up in price, there website now shows the base price at over 40K with no additional improvements. I don't get it, I paid 31500 before tax for a slide model with a basement and much larger tanks as well as more cabinets to hang clothes.

One last thought about that Honda. I too have that generator and believe it's a good product, but, be aware that elevation will reduce your wattage. I noticed the last time I was camping when the Honda was plugged into my primary power cord of my trailer that the micro or the AC would draw the wattage down to the red zone on my plug in meter. The red zone starts at 110 watts. This occurred at about 8000 feet. Repeating the same situation at my home that sits at 1750 feet the wattage stayed just inside the green. Running any motor on low power, often called "Brown Out Conditions" will decrease it's life. I would plan on buying two Honda generators and hooking them together or simply buy the next model up. In previous posts Skyhammer provided the name of an inverter type generator that produces 2800 watts while almost matching the db rating of the Honda and it cost hundreds less.

Providing you are still interested in an 840 there is a bran new one available listed in RV Trader. 28000 with lots of extras. Buying second hand from a private party is the best way. Learn more by going to Truck Camper Adventures, Mike explains things that are not often spoke about but are very important.

I don't know about the majority needing a truck camper for boon docking but certainly my reason as well as your reason make up the majority of T/C owners. I still have a strong need to own a truck camper because I fish. My problem is I expect a high level of quality if a manufacturer is going to be successful at selling me a 12 foot box that cost 45000 dollars. To date I have the truck and everything needed to haul and tow my boat and a camper but I still have no camper and my vacations continue to be adversely effected by this situation. Oh well, maybe someday.

I understand why some people want truck campers, but IMO the list of reasons is short. Towing a trailer makes more since for most people. Those that need to tow boats or horse trailers make up the bulk of truck camper owners. The Tundra, due to it's short bed makes a poor choice for hauling around a camper. However, if you insist, I would look at the Northstar Laredo if you like hard wall models. Northstar also make pop up's that would fit your truck. I would avoid a slide out due to weight and problems that often come with these models. Spend some time learning about truck campers and then go rent one and give it a try. The expense to rent one for a week will be minimal compared to a purchase and you will know for sure if you will be happy owning one.

Poodlemaster 187, take a look at NATCOA where Duncan has provided pictures and a great deal of insight on this model. Personally, I have been looking at this model since it's first year of production and it continues to improve. Northstar may be the only builder out there that has no negative feed back on the web. The owner, Rex has kept the design simple and avoided options that typically fail, he clearly believes in the acronym K.I.S.S. For more articles take a look at what Mike at Truck Camper Adventure has written about Northstar. On his site there is information on that refrigerator you listed as well as many other helpful suggestions. Good luck with your new TC and please post as many pictures as possible.

Here is a few more thoughts. I used to be a Ford guy but I never had very good service life from them. My last and only Ford diesel was bought new in 88, this was the 1st year of the 7.3. 19 times, mostly by tow truck it returned to the dealer, after 2 years of grief I sold it. The experience was so regretful that it took me 28 years before I bought my second domestic diesel. For me, even though Ford has improved greatly they were never considered. Driving up and down the interstate I still see more dead Fords than any other brand. The GMC/Chevy diesel trucks in 2016 were mostly unchanged while the Fords and the Dodges were in a HP&Torque race to be king of the hill. I wanted the tried and proven truck. 2017 brought big changes to the bow tie brand, torque and HP were significantly increased. I would have left the drive train alone and added a gauge for the deft tank, bigger tires and wheels and a better radio with CD compatibility. Providing a electric sliding rear window would also be nice. The bottom line with today's powerful diesel trucks offered by the big three is that they will all do anything 95% of us want providing they are kept in good running condition. Today's truck buyers have much too be happy about. The only real down side is that they all cost so much. One closing thought, having stated you are interested in a camper be very careful when you choose your truck. Make sure you know exactly what your camper and all other payload weight equals. Look at the drivers side door jamb for the max payload number that the truck is rated to carry. Today's large campers when combined with tongue weight, occupants, food and of coarse beer can easily exceed even 1 ton truck capacity's. Extended cabs, diesels and 4x4 options greatly reduce what the payload will be. Compare a 1 ton gas, super cab two wheel drive truck to a 4x4 crew cab diesel. The weight that both trucks are rated for will be vastly different. Do your home work before you decide, other wise you may be sorry.

You made the right choice. Big campers and big trailers need dual wheel, long wheel base trucks. Now pick the truck that has the best transmission. My 32 years of experience driving big rigs told me to buy the Allison. Driving my 2016 GMC, dually, crew cab, 4x4 diesel is a pleasure. I can drive with my bed loaded and a 7500 lb trailer in tow at what ever speed I choose up any grade. The combination of tow mode and a compression brake controls the rig going down hill with little or no brake pressure. Last year while towing a 3000 lb boat trailer and having a 5000 lb camper in the bed the results were the same. Fuel millage stays in the mid 13 range with a full tank lasting 525 miles. Currently, my demands of the truck are minimal but the future is coming quick and my needs will triple, that is when I will most appreciate the diesel/Allison drive train. Here is a little extra food for thought, September and October are by far the best time to buy. Talk to your dealer if you will be ordering a custom truck since there is a cut off time when the factory switches over to the next model year. Good luck

I carry one and think you would be wise to do the same thing along with a best quality 40-50 foot 20 amp cord. I use electric starters for the bar-b-que and I also charge boat battery's while camping. Having the right size and length electric cords is a must. Speaking of extra weight, don't forget the chains and locks to prevent your camping gear from disappearing.

You should have no problem finding this unit. There is a very clean 2011 in the RV trader for 25K. I recently saw a 2014 in Ventura on a lot that sold in less than a week for around 25-30. I also like the floor plan of this model but I am not so sure of the quality. Unfortunately after 2 years of researching truck campers I have become a skeptic when it comes to there build quality. I hope you find a good one that preforms as intended.

Wow, that looks ugly. I was faced with a similar problem 25 years ago after I bought an old 11' Dreamer. The good news is weight is not a problem and everything is exposed. Buy a sheet of marine grade plywood and mill down some quality wood and go to town. I would cut those wings off and replace them with new material. Remove the bad framing and re;place. Then freeze block everywhere. Pre-drill and use dry wall screws. I would also peel that siding up a little more to make sure the rot is only near the bottom. Plate steel and SS eye bolts will be cheap and more than strong enough to hold everything in place. Bottom line, this is all easy work.

Good information, I remember a Warn hub exploding on the front end of my CJ at the worst possible time, the result was an out of control slide backwards for about 60' down the hill into a gully. The pair of briefs I was wearing that day were never the same. Just goes to show that sometimes the big name brands are not the best available. Reminds me of truck campers built by the top three manufacturers.

That will work fine. Dee Zee is the most popular brand and that price is about the going rate. Figure on about 70 pounds or so. I believe you will like your Laredo. I just spoke to Mike, the guy who runs Truck Camper Adventures, take a look at his site for all the upgrades he has done on his Laredo.

I am looking for some feed back from owners, past and present. I noticed several 1191's for sale that are late models. I thought the 1172 was there biggest unit during the past several years. When were the 1191's discontinued? Any input that can be provided will be appreciated.

I have to say Steve, you are creative. Sounds like it will provide interesting reading for the rest of us. Here's my first three thoughts, I would use T&G sheet metal for the exterior. This product will be cost effective, easy to install and will never de-lamb. Second, I would consider a slide assembly like Host use's. Third, try to install the refrigerator on a fixed wall so you can vent through the ceiling. Good luck with your build.

I agree with skyhammer, the need for "travel" in the tie downs is absolutely necessary. The stretch in straps work great for securing loads of wood or even jerking out 4x4's from mud but there stretch normally only occurs with maximum tension. I would bet they would do harm to campers if used as you suggest, especially when traveling off road.

Additionally we truck campers should be aware that there is a stigma attached to us by some. I have personally been to membership campgrounds who do not allow any truck campers, even the one's with a combined value of 100 grand, but they will allow the 4 year old entry level motor home that blue books for 18 grand, don't figure. Maintaining clean nice looking rigs that appear to be outfitted with well designed after market products will help to change this undeserved label.

Thanks guys for your input. The thought of leaving both these bran new battery's on trickle 24/7 is out of the question, especially sense I also have two 12volt deep cycle and one 12 volt stating battery in the boat that suffer from similar characteristics. I guess the best I can do is baby sit battery's every weekend.
